Summary: Kame's dream was to stay in one place permanantly..will his dream ever come true.
Kame walks into school the next day still wondering why he decided to risk having a friendship with Koki. He heads to his locker to get the few books he’s going to need when he sees two of Koki’s friends head his way. They seemed to be absorbed in an intense conversation as they walked by Kame, too busy to realize they just walked by Koki’s new friend, who hears Koki’s name and hospital in the same sentence and his blood freezes causing him to run after them. He finally catches up to them just as they reach the soccer field.
“ Maru! Tat-chan!” Kame stops, panting as he tries to catch his breath, “ Koki...what’s wrong with him? I didn’t mean to eavesdrop but as you two passed by my locker I heard something about a hospital and Maru mentioned his name.”
“ Oh hey Kazu. Its okay, we didn’t mean to ignore you. But yeah Koki’s in the hospital, he uh...had an accident last night as we were coming back from the movies. The idiot decided to pop a wheelie in the middle of a crowded lane of traffic and he was thrown from his bike.” Maru answers.
“ Is he going to be okay?” Kame asked concerned.
“ He should be. The doctors said that since he was wearing a helmet and bounced off of the car in front of him that he doesn’t have serious injuries. But his bike is going to be in the shop for a bit though. He’s more concerned about his bike than himself.” Ueda finishes and rolls his eyes at the last comment.
“ How long is he going to be out for?” Kame asked feeling afraid for some reason.
“ Just today and tomorrow.”
“ That’s a good.” all of a sudden he felt relief wash over him as he said, “ Hmm...I think I’ll go by on my way home to drop off his school work.”
“ Alright...oh great...its Ryo and Tomo.” Maru warns Kame as the pair get closer.
“ Hey Kazu...” Ryo starts but Kame cuts him off.
“ Who said you could call me that. That’s a little too intimate of nickname when we aren’t and never will be close enough for that.” Kame said annoyed at Ryo.
“ Ryo can call you any name he wants, you belong to him remember?” Tomo said.
“ But wasn't it Koki who had his arms wrapped around him yesterday?” Maru asks.
“ Yeah wasn't Koki the one who ran his tongue down Kame’s neck?” Ueda asked.
Ryo answered yes to both questions.
“ Case in point, so then how can I belong to you then?” Kame wondered. “ Besides, Koki’s right...you are definitely NOT my type. I don’t date ignorant jackasses who’s only goal in life is to see how many lives they can destroy. Or who just wants to have one more notch on his score card.”
“ Look, kid.” Ryo looks like he wants to grab Kame by the shirt collar and shove him backwards into the tree behind them but being out numbered three to two made him control himself, “ I saw you first, not Tanaka, so that makes you mine and the sooner you get it through your thick skull on who is going to be the one you give it up to the better off you’re going to be.” He glares.
“ Hmmph...I’d rather give myself to Koki than either one of you bastards.” Kame retorts at the same time they hear the morning bell.
“ Why you...” Tomo starts but Ryo stops him and just drags him off to class since neither one can really afford to be late anymore without getting suspended.
“ We’ll see about that!” Ryo shouts over his shoulder.
“ One of these days...I’m going to beat the crap out of those two.” Ueda growled.
“ Come on guys, we have class to get too.” Kame says and three of them head back inside.
At the hospital:
“ Hey Koki, how are you feeling?” Kame asks as he walks in lays Koki’s work on the table next to his bed.
“ Hey Kazu. Alright...my head kinda hurts and I have a few cracked ribs but otherwise I’m okay. I take it Maru and Ueda told you I was here?”
Kame just nods and sits on the edge of Koki’s bed.
“ They didn’t happen to leave out what I did, did they?” Koki asks feeling dumb and sheepish.
“ No they told me that too. What possessed you to do something that stupid?” Kame asks as sadden expression passes through his eyes.
“ I don’t know......just thought it would be fun, I guess. I’m sorry Kazuya, I should’ve thought first I guess. Especially after what you told me yesterday.” Koki says feeling guilty.
“ Its okay, Koki. Anyway, I brought your work that you missed today and I’ll bring you tomorrow’s as well. Since I imagine the food here sucks, I brought you some pizza as well.”
“ Thanks Kame. Remind me to pay you back for the food. So aside from that crap,” he points to his homework, “ what else did I miss?”
“ Not much. It was pretty quiet really, except for my run in with Ryo and Tomo. He still thinks he’s going to get in my pants..the jerk.”
“ I heard. From what Ueda’s been able to dig up Ryo’s pretty serious about this and since I won’t be there to at least keep an eye on him...be careful Kame, I wouldn’t put anything past that guy. Before you get offended I have always had this feeling that you’re more than capable of handling yourself. I still get concerned for my friends though...even Tat-chan and he can take out both Ryo and Tomo without much effort all by himself, due to the fact he’s a boxer.” Koki says wondering why he feels butterflies in his stomach every time Kame comes near him or why he can’t seem to get the guy out of his head.
“ I’m not offended, I think I would be if you didn’t care though.” Kame chuckles. “ I hate to cut my visit short but I have to go and pick my brother up from baseball practice, otherwise I will wind up by sitting through a two hour lecture. Hey he has a game this saturday, wanna come watch?” Kame asks since Koki did say that they should hang out sometime.
“ Yeah sure.”
“ Cool.” Kame says and writes his cell number down for Koki to put in his phone later.
“ See you later, Kame. Oh I will definitely tear this up after I put it in my phone so Ryo’s not blowing up your phone.” Koki says as Kame walks to the door. “ Hey Kame? Did you really tell that to Ryo?” Koki brings up the comment Kame made to Ryo about Koki.
“ What? About the fact that I would give it up to you over him? Yeah I did.” Kame said with a wink and headed to his car to pick up his brother.
Blushing a nice shade of red Koki gets started on his food and homework, thanking god Kame made a photo copy of his notes so Koki has a decent shot at getting a passing grade. Kame gets to the practice field just as his brother’s practice ends. After throwing his stuff in the trunk of the car, Ryu sits on the seat with his legs sticking out of the door so he can change his shoes cause heaven for bid he tracks mud inside Kame’s new car. After changing into his sneakers he tosses his cleats into his duffle bag and sits back down and asks...
“ Do you think we’re going be moving again, nii-chan? I’m tired of leaving my friends behind.”
“ I don’t know, Ryu. I wish I had an answer for you and yeah I know how you feel.” He answers truthfully, thinking about Koki as he starts the car and heads home.
Once they’re home he sends Ryu upstairs to shower and do his homework while Kame starts his. Not feeling like cooking tonight, he asks the cook to make something instead. He’s just about to start his math homework when his phone goes off...its Koki, he flips it open.
“ Oh hey Koki. What’s up?” Kame asks.
“ Not much. Hey have you finished that sheet we had to do for biology yet? Cause I’m confused..I think I got something wrong but I’m not sure.” Koki asks.
“ Yeah I just finished it. I’ll look at it when I come by tomorrow.”
“ Thanks Kazu. You’re a life saver, so do you know how long you’re going to be staying for?” Koki asks.
“ Nope. My mom hasn’t had a chance to ask my dad yet. I hope we don’t move again, my younger brother’s just as sick of moving as I am.” He sighs just as the cook calls Kame and Ryu for dinner since his parents are working late...again.
“ I hope you don’t move away again either.” Koki sounds sad.
“ Well dinner’s ready, so I’ll talk to you later Koki. Good night.”
“ Okay, goodnight Kame.” with that Koki disconnects the line and finishes his conversation with Tat-chan.
At the hospital:
“ Well, Koki? Does he know anything?” Ueda asks.
“ No, not yet. Poor guy, I feel bad for him and his brother. I know what they’re going through. He’s risking getting hurt just by being friends with me, which is why he’s not willing to get close to the rest of you lot.” Koki answers back.
“ I can understand that, this way if he does move away he feels like the pain won’t be so bad for everyone involved. But I get the feeling that you’d be more hurt than the rest of us, Koki, do you like him?”
“ What that’s...yeah I think I’m starting to fall for him.” Koki admits.
“ Then tell him.”
“ What’s the point when he may not stay for very long? But I hate to cut this short but my meds are kicking in.” Koki says stifling a huge yawn.
“ Alright. I’ll call you tomorrow. Later.” Ueda says and leaves.
After his friend leaves Koki turns on his side and sees a shooting star from his hospital room window, he closes his eyes and makes a silent wish for Kame to stay in Tokyo for good. He knows he starting to feel something for Kame and he would love nothing more than to confess but he doesn’t want to put that kind of burden on his new friend, besides it would only make leaving harder for Kame...for them both knowing that they’ll never be able to be together anymore. He closes his eyes for a second time and falls asleep dreaming about Kame as a single tear slowly slides down his face.
Ten miles away Kame sees the same shooting star and makes the same wish as Koki. He knew from the day that they’re hands accidently touched that he felt the same spark between them that Koki did. He’s already running the risk of being hurt just by being friends with him, he knows that if they let something happen between them that the pain is going to be unbearable. But he does like him, he likes Koki alot and he knows that he should make the most of his time while he’s back in the city he was born in; he knows that leaving with “what if’s” and “maybe’s” is worse than knowing what can be and not what might have been.
He honestly doesn’t know what to do, he enjoyed the feel of Koki’s arms wrapped around him that after noon when they were irritating Ryo on purpose and ever since Koki ran his tongue ever so lightly down his neck, he wondered and dreamed about how it would feel if Koki didn’t stop at his shoulder but stripped him naked and kept going. Unknowingly Kame fell asleep with the same single tear trickling down his face that his friend did ten miles away.
