Koki and Kame wake up to the worst possible day of their lives. After finding in each other the very thing that was missing in their lives, the one thing that made both being what they were more bearable..the one and only thing that gave them the courage to do what they knew had to be done despite the fact that everyone involved wishes things could’ve turned out differently for the couple. They had no choice but to let it go in the end to save both humans and vampyres alike. In Koki’s long life letting go of Kame, who is his sole reason for still breathing, is the hardest thing he’s ever had to do.
Kame’s no different. He lost what it felt like to be truly happy when his family was killed and he never knew if he would ever get that feeling back again. So he just kept moving forwards, existing, not caring whether or not he lived too see the sun come up again. He was an empty shell compared to those around him who didn’t go through what he did, yeah sure other people have lost their families to things like disease or natural disaster of one variation or another. But very, very few know what’s like to see your family drained dry right in front of you, not being able to do anything for reasons you can’t explain. He never understood why he didn’t try and save his family from the rouge vampyres that invaded his home that night, he was certainly capable of it..but he didn’t move from the closet he was in. Other than being left alive, those who killed his family left them alive long enough to say good bye to their only surviving kin...Kazuya.
Now he knows why he was left alive that night and for Kame it seems like it was a life time ago. It was his undying, almost epic love for the creature laying next to him..he had this pendant for a reason and even though he didn’t know it then, he was meant to stop a long standing feud and it was like his mother said to him in a dream he had on more than one occasion, he would find what he’s looking for in the last place he ever expected to find it. He would find love and, by proxy, happiness again all he had to do was just keep going. She hinted that someone who would become more important too him than he could ever imagine would need him very soon. Yeah well, Kame didn’t exactly believe the dream since he was drinking quite heavily the night he had it, so he just chalked it up to being drunker than a damned skunk...until Maki slammed his head against the marble pillar which caused him to black out and that very same dream came flooding back.
He doesn’t realize he was crying until he felt the cold, gently touch of Koki’s fingers wiping the tears from his damp cheeks, not bothering to acknowledge Koki’s presence verbally, Kame rolls over and buries his face in Koki’s chest, griping Koki so tightly that he almost squeezes the air from Koki’s lungs, he just lets the tears fall. Understanding how Kame was feeling with everything that he knows Kame as gone through in his life, all the losses he’s had to deal with, Koki doesn’t say anything to try and comfort his partner...he just lets Kame release his emotions and rubs small circles on Kame’s back. Koki himself has known loss exactly the same as Kame did and he told Kame as much when they first started going together, so he can fully understand how Kame feels and just how difficult its going to be for them both let each other go.
“Here...” he hands Kame some tissue so he can clear his nose.
Kame doesn’t say anything, he just takes the tissues and smiles gratefully. He wants to say something, anything to Koki but he just can’t. Koki doesn’t press him to talk as Kame nestles back into his arms and just lays there quietly. They spend most of the morning like that, just laying there in their bed...just letting their hearts and emotions do all the talking.
Various people, human and vampyre, come by and tried to get the couple to talk or even move for that matter, but give up once they feel the tension that hangs about in the atmosphere of the room. Not even Nino and Maki have the heart to do or say anything ignorant and snarky as they watch the scene in front of them and with them stood Jin, Ryo, Jun, Junno, Taipi, Kusano, Ueda, Sho, and Tomo. No one had the heart to disturb the couple when they all knew what was being given up by both of them. As much as Maki still dislikes Kame for what he did and as much as Nino is still angry with Koki for not allowing him to feed off the forbidden fruit that is Kazuya Kamenashi...they both, in their own twisted way, still care about Koki and therefore realize that their hearts are just as heavy as everyone else’s.
By mid-morning everyone had left and went on to finish the preparations for tonight. While Nino would normally complain about Koki not doing his fair share and helping out, he knew as well as anyone that Koki’s time is better spent exactly where it is...with Kame. He has come to realize what Kame is sacrificing not just for his kind but for him and Jun as well, he starts seeing Kame in a different light.
“ You know, Maki, Kame’s not so bad of a guy and he does love Koki. You don’t know this but at one point Koki had seriously considered walking out into the sun..until he met Kazuya. Even if you two were still together in the last two hundred years I have known Koki...not even you could have saved him. I honestly regret the things I did and said, now I wish I could take it all back.”
“ How can you say such a thing? He stole Koki from me and I will...” Jun cuts her off...
“ Just let it go Maki, face it you lost any right to Koki long ago. Do you honestly think that as much as he’s changed, that you could’ve made him happy in the end? They’re giving up a helluva lot for everyone that’s involved. They want to end this and Kame wants to try and save his friend, there’s no crime in that. If you and Koki were together now, with all that’s going on, Koki wouldn’t be so hesitant in giving you up nor so willing to save Yuichi. Kazuya gives Koki a strength he hasn’t felt since his parents died. Other than Kazuya..Koki’s parents were the only other ones willing to give up everything just too save their only son. Would you be willing to make the choices that Kazuya’s had to make since he’s been here? Would you be as willing as Kazuya is to give up the only person who makes you complete for the greater good?”
“ No, I wouldn’t. And you guys are right, I have seen what that hum...what Kazuya has done for Koki and while it still stings that Koki will never be mine again, I’m happy for him-the both of them. I do regret that night I injured Kazuya but at the time all I could think about was my own selfish desires and not about the bigger picture. He really is better for Koki than I ever was and I...” She couldn’t finish.
“ Can’t bring yourself to come between the two of them anymore.” Sho finishes the sentence for her, as Maki just nods.
Back in Koki’s bedroom:
“ Kazuya” For the second time that morning,Koki was the first to break the silence that surrounded them.
Kame just looks up at him, his eyes still red from crying so much, still not being able to say anything for fear of crying again.
“ Kazu..speak to me, please baby?” Koki’s voice is quiet, pleading, almost whisper-like as his fingers dance lightly across Kame’s face, Kame tilts his head into Koki’s hand desperate to feel more. He takes a deep steading breath and says...
“ Yeah, what?”
“ I love you Kame.” Koki smiles and tilts his head to the side as if he was a puppy.
“ I love you too Koki.” Kame couldn’t help but smile every time his lover did that.
“ Hey look..its raining out, wanna go and sit outside? Jin and Ryo brought you some lunch on their way over and I have a bottle of blood from my personal stock, which I would love to show you by the way, we can eat/drink outside.” Koki asks.
“ Sure, but shouldn’t we helping out?” Kame answers.
“ Its okay, they’ll call us if they really need our help..come on.” Koki said and got up, pulling Kame to his feet.
After a quick shower Kame and Koki pack what they need and head out into the garden. They just get started when Koki says...
“ I forgot something...I’ll be back.” He gets up to leave when he feels a tug on his shirt.
“ Don’t go...please?” Kame says..
“ Its alright, baby, I’ll be right back.” He loosens Kame’s hold on his shirt and disappears back inside while Kame waits anxiously for Koki’s return only to be interrupted by Maki.
“ Hey Kazuya. Mind if I sit down?” She asks all trace of malice gone from her voice.
“ Sure go ahead.” He motions to the spot next to him that isn’t Koki’s. “ This is a first, ever since you have been here all you ever called me was “human”, “that human” or some variation of human...what’s up?”
“ I just wanted to say thank you for what you’re doing. I know after everything I have done, I don’t deserve it and I’m sorry for treating you the way I have. I have come to understand what you have done for Koki and while it still hurts to see the two of you together, I can deal with it and move on. It wouldn’t have worked with Koki and I anyway...I’m too selfish and not so willing to do what you’re doing just to protect him, who knows..maybe in time I will change. Well...Koki’s back so I will leave you two alone now and thank you for giving Koki a reason to keep living.” She smiles, hands Kame a flower and leaves the couple in peace.
Smiling Kame thanks her for the flower as Koki sits back down.
“ Hey baby, I told you I’d come back. What did Maki want? She didn’t..” Kame cuts him off..
“ No, she didn’t try and harm me. She just wanted to talk and make amends for everything she’s put me through. She even gave me this..” Kame shows Koki the black rose Maki gave him.
“ She does mean what she said then. Its not often she gives those to people she’s done wrong too, I would know I never got one, you are something special aren’t you.” he says as he hands Kame back his rose.
“ So what did you forget?” Kame asks while he eats his food.
Koki puts the bottle down he was drinking from and hands Kame an envelope.
“ This...its a letter from Maru’s father trying to convince his son to stop what he’s doing. His father left it with Jin and Jin gave it too me to give to you. That way we can give it to Maru if we can get your pendant back.” Koki explains as Kame puts the letter in his pocket and leans back into Koki’s arms.
They stay like that for the rest of the day. They don’t see the sun go down as the rain decided to not let up, it only came down harder almost like the very heavens themselves were lamenting the sadness that perpetuates the air.
“ We better go get ready, Kame.” Koki says quietly as Kame just nods in response.
Back in their room they just got done changing their clothes when Ueda knocks and tells them its time to go. Kame says ok and goes to follow Ueda to the side gates of the compound when he notices that Koki hasn’t followed him.
“ Koki are..” Ueda starts but Kame stops him.
“ You go ahead Tat-chan. We’ll be along in a bit.” Kame says.
Ueda leaves and allows Kame to deal with Koki.
“ Koki...talk to me.” Kame walks over and hugs Koki from behind.
Turning around Koki just buries his face in Kame’s neck and wraps his arms around Kame’s slim waist wishing he didn’t have to do this. Its only when Koki does this that Kame notices that Koki started crying the moment he buried his face in his neck.
“ Koki..I wish there was another way. But Maru just wouldn’t listen to reason and I don’t want to let you go...but we don’t have any other options in short of killing him and I want to avoid if I can. This is as difficult for me as it is for you and I...” he stops not knowing what else to say too try and bring some sort of comfort to his boyfriend.
When Koki lifts his head to look Kame in the face does he see just how much Koki’s been crying. The look Koki now gives him so dejected, so broken that it causes Kame to start feeling his own still unshed tears form in the corners of his.
“ Koki...” Kame grabs Koki’s head and pulls him in for what very well could be the last time their lips ever touch. Pulling away Kame’s says..“ Come on..the others are counting on us.” He intertwines his fingers with Koki and head out to answer Maru’s war summons.
When they get there they find Kusano and Taipi arguing over the fact that he can’t follow Taipi when Kame and Jin get to go. He understands Kame going but not Jin..what he doesn’t know is that Jin is battle tested and soley Tomo’s charge due to Tomo’s high ranking in Jun’s guard squad.
As Kame and the others walk past those that can’t go for either being human, Taipi and Ryo or are not strong enough, Junno. Ueda slightly nods to Junno and Kame catching Taipi’s silent plea of “ please...don’t let Kusano die” just nods his head and follows Koki out into the night.
