Koki remembers it like it was yesterday, the day that changed not only his life but Kazuya’s as well. It was horrible, the memory of it, the helplessness that settled in upon everybody within the Tanaka household. That day started out like any other. It was bright, sunny and the weather was somewhere between cold and insanely hot, but that didn’t keep the wheels from fate turning now did it? The Tanaka house had just settled down for breakfast, all except one...Koki Tanaka was still asleep when the phone rings waking him from the dream he was enjoying, annoyed he went to see who had the nerve to disturb his slumber. But when he gets downstairs he finds everything in an uproar as his parents are dashing out of the house.
“ What’s going on?” He asks, yawning.
“ Um...its the Kamenashi’s....There’s been an accident and..” His brother started.
“ The Kamenashi’s? Accident? What are you talking about?” Koki still hasn’t fully woken up yet so it hasn’t completely sunk in that his best friend might be dead or worse.
“ They were coming back from vacation when they were hit head on by delivery truck...”
Then it dawns on Koki what is happening...
“ Don’t tell me Kazuya is...” He stopped as hot tears started to form at the corners of his eyes.
“ Kazu is alive but he and the truck driver were the only ones. His parents and brothers all perished. So mom and dad went to pick him up from the hospital. It seems he’s going to be living with us from now on.”
“ Better here than some stupid boys home.” Koki said wrinkling his nose as he sat down to eat.
“ We’re back!” His mom calls from the doorway.
“ Hey Kazu...you can room with me, alright?” Koki said as he hugged his friend and took him upstairs.
“ Thanks Koki.” Kame said with the smallest of smiles.
Flash forward
It’s been seven years since that day and, yes, Kame’s still living with Koki and his family. Only koki’s older brother has now moved out and while two seventeen year old boys can each have their own room, for whatever reason Kame couldn’t bring himself to leave Koki’s room. He’s not entirely sure why but he does know that he feels safe there and even safer when Koki’s near him. He liked the feeling, maybe a little too much, but who can blame him really...he has been an orphan since he was eleven and that safe feeling he lost that day he lost his family. He only got it back after living with his best friend and his family.
“ Hey you two! You’re going to be late for school..now hurry up!” Koki’s mom calls through the door.
“ Kame! Wake up!” Koki groans and tosses a pillow at Kame’s head.
“ Why? Its only...” He starts but realizes its a school day and groans into Koki’s pillow.
“ I hate school!” Koki whines as him and Kame pull themselves out of bed...only to blush when he sees Kame’s bare chest when the covers fall off to settle in Kame’s lap.
“ Stop it! He’s like a brother you baka!” Koki says to himself mentally.
“ You alright, Koki?” Kame asks as he gets dressed.
“ Yeah, I’m fine. I just hate school is all.” Koki grumbles while Kame just laughs.
Koki finally gets out of bed and as he’s pulling a t-shirt on, he catches Kame watching him out of the corner of his eye. It was another irritating day at school for Koki, every time their classmates or friends for that matter got too close to Kame...Koki wanted to rush over and pull him away. He could understand being protective of his friend, but why he got jealous every time he had to share him with someone..he didn’t know. They were standing at their lockers when the Captain of the tennis club shows up and asks Kame if he wants to watch their practice match.
“ Why? I’m not even in the club, besides I was going to watch the soccer team’s team practice anyway.”
“ Because I thought it would be fun. Don’t you have to be ON the team to get anywhere near that field anyway?”
“ Yeah, so what’s your point?” Kame asks.
“ Exactly that Kame. You’re a baseball player and the soccer team is like the Elite sports team of the school. So how can you...?”
“ Because of me” Koki says annoyed as he leans on Kame’s shoulder, while Kame just smiles at him enjoying the warmth from his friend being so close.
“ That’s right..I forgot...you’re the new Captain now. Can’t I borrow him just this once, koki, you’re always hogging him.” She whines.
“ No.” Koki says as he rolls his eyes and stuffs his hands in the pockets of his jeans.
“ I’m sorry, but I already promised Koki I’d watch. See you later.” Kame says as him and Koki head to the practice field.
“ You didn’t promise me anything, Kame, so why?”
Not sure himself, Kame just shrugs as he holds the gate open for some passing cheerleaders. Everything was going well until Kame’s attention was diverted by the cheerleaders that has passed them earlier. Koki told the team to practice some kicks while he watched as one of the girls started to shamelessly flirt with his Kazuya..going so far as to accidently on purpose spill her drink on his clothes, which were actually Koki’s. That’s when something in his mind snaps and before he can stop himself, he’s running over to where Kame is.
“ You okay?” He asks Kame while glaring at the stupid girl.
“ I’m fine, Koki, its only water.” Kame replies.
“ Whatever.” He snorts and turns to the cheerleaders that were watching as Kame changed his shirt. “ why don’t you lot go somewhere else already and leave us alone.”
“ But my boyfriend...” One of the girls starts and points to the group of guys behind Koki. Koki relents and lets her stay but shoos the others away and goes back to practice. It was then that Koki realizes the true nature of his feelings for Kame and it scared him. Yeah, sure they were best friends and have always had a tight bond, but he never thought that it would develop into something more....especially when that “something” might cause him to lose his friend forever.
Practice ends, Kame and Koki are sitting on the hill above the soccer field. Koki sighs as Kame lays on his back watching the back of his friend’s head and that’s when he notices that something is bugging Koki.
“ You okay, Koki?” Kame asks still not bothering to sit up.
“ I guess there’s no better time to tell him.” Koki thought before lying down next to Kame.
“ Its just that...I love you Kame. Not just as a brother or even has my best friend..but like for real.” He says while Kame remains silent. “ Its okay if you don’t feel the same...I just..”
“ I’m in love with you too, Koki.” Kame says, his voice is a whisper. “ So now what?” He asks a little louder this time causing Koki to prop himself up on his elbow, laying his free hand gently on Kame’s hips.
“ Well...” Koki says as he leans down to brush his lips against Kame’s, who doesn’t push him away but responds eagerly..parting his lips to allow Koki to slowly shove his tongue between his teeth. Pulling apart their hearts are beating ninety miles a minute.
“ So, how was it?” Koki asks breathlessly.
“ I’ll let you know..” Kame responds pulling Koki back down for more.
