A/N: This was written for redina who wanted a Koki/Bem fic. She got tired of seeing all these Bem/other pairing fics and none geared towards her personal preference which is Koki/anyone.
“ Just make yourself comfortable and I’ll start lunch. Do you like chicken?” Koki asks his new friend.
“ That’s fine.” Bem says nodding as he sits on the couch.
Koki’s little dog came over and stood up on Bem’s leg asking for attention. Koki seen this and told the little dog to leave their guest alone, Rai’s ears droop a little and he gets down.
“ That’s alright, most dogs are afraid of me...while cats seem to love me. Odd really.” Bem says as he gives Rai the attention he wants, satisfied the little dog lays down on the carpet at Bem’s feet. Koki starts lunch. Ten minutes later Koki and Bem are sitting at the dinning room table and eat lunch.
“ This is good.” Bem compliments.
“ Thanks. So where are you from? Are you traveling alone?” Koki asks, while they eat.
“ I just moved here from Chiba and yes, I am.” The melancholy gaze in Bem’s eyes seemed to darken and it made Koki want to hold him.
“ Well...you’re not alone now. So what’s with the white stick you carry with you?” Koki says as they finish lunch.
“ Oh this...I don’t know. That’s what I’m trying to find out, when I woke up I found it laying next to me.”
“ I don’t really know anything about such things but it appears to be made from human bone. I wonder who made it and left it for you. I know this is a rather personal question and feel free to refuse to answer it but...you appear human, unless you’re angry and your emotions get the better of you, do you have human male parts as well?” Koki was genuinely curious about such things.
Bem smiles and flushes at Koki’s question, and normally he wouldn't answer....but there’s something ‘different’ about the guy sitting across from him. He’s full human yes, but there’s something about the way he looks at Bem that pulls the Youkai in and won’t allow him to let go. That and he did make Bem the first human meal he’s had in months and he did help Bem to keep his temper under control in a park full of people. So he decides to answer that question.
“ Yes, I do. You’re a curious human, aren’t you?” Bem asks.
“ More or less. When I was a kid my curiosity got me into trouble more than once. My parents yelled at me so much, I started thinking that they couldn’t talk in a normal volume anymore.” Koki chuckles, “ So much so that when they did talk to me or anyone for that matter, in a normal tone...it was shocking to say the least.”
“ You were a rascal, weren’t you?” Bem asks amused.
“ Yeah. That I was. So have you ever thought of trying to find a way to become human? It don’t matter to me what you are, to be honest.” Koki asks.
“ Yes, that’s why I’m trying to find out more about the cane you saw.” The youkai answers.
“ Well, its not only the light that makes up human beings....its the darkness as well. The very evil you fought against the night we met is an example of such darkness. All humans have it and some handle it and others dive into it, happily. But if you think about it...you’re more human than most people I know. Anyway, I have to meet a guy about a pet shop...want to tag along?” Koki says.
“ You’re changing jobs?” Bem asks not really surprised as he heard the abuse Koki took from the other loaders on his job the night he saved him.
“ Yeah. I’ve come full circle with that crappy loading job and I have enough saved up to hopefully do what I’ve always wanted to do and own my own business. I’ve always loved animals and the owner of my favorite pet shop is selling his business, so I have an appointment with him in an hour to see if I can buy it from him.”
“ I’m glad. The night I was tailing the guy who tried to kill you...I passed by your job at the loading company and I heard the others talking about you behind your back.”
“ Oh that....yeah they always did that, ever since I started there. The managers like me and they sorta favor me. On top of that, I’m not straight so they feel threatened by that.” Koki says with a shrug.
“ Doesn’t that bother you?”
“ Why should it? I can’t change how they feel. But I hurt my back real bad one day and it was then that I decided it was time to move on. I was given paid leave to heal up properly from my injury and a double figure bonus on my next pay check, since the accident wasn’t my fault and the others tried to set me up. It would’ve worked...only the idiots forgot about the small fact that my trucks were near the security cameras and their actions were caught on camera.”
“ That’s terrible. Humans should treat each other better than that.” Bem says outraged.
“ Calm yourself Bem, it doesn’t bother me. But you’re right we should, we won’t though...its just the way us humans are. That’s why I said you know more about the meaning of being human, than us humans do. So, want to come with me or no?” Koki asks, cleaning up their lunch dishes.
“ That’s okay. I was going to see if can’t dig up any clues on this cane.” Bem declines.
“ Too bad. I like you but...okay.” Koki smiles and starts the dishwasher.
Bem and Koki leave and go their separate ways. Koki heads to his meeting with the pet shop owner and Bem to his destination. Koki and his lawyer, meet up at the pet shop and after hours of negotiations...Koki finally owns his own business. Happy with the result, the ex-owner’s lawyer hands Koki the keys and the code to the alarm system. Koki is so excited that he goes for a walk around the city to try get rid of some of his pent up energy. Instead of thinking about his pet shop...he finds himself thinking about Bem and how good looking he is, despite being what he is. He can’t get the youkai out of his head or his heart, his lower half seemed pretty interested after seeing the guy without his shirt on. He heads home for the night.
Across the city at the harbor where Bem sleeps in an old ship, he can barely eat the weeds he picked....he can’t stop thinking about Koki and why his heart skips a beat every time the man smiles at him or why he gets butterflies in his stomach every time the human’s near him. He wonders if this is what love is like...but then he thinks that’s impossible. He’s not human though he looks the part, how can a human love him.
‘ I can’t be in love....can I?’ he thinks as he watches the water lap gently at the base of the ship.
Being unable to sleep Koki gets up and pulls on a pair of jeans and a black form fitting tank top. He laces up his trainers and goes for a walk, trying to clear his head of the Youkai enough to get some sleep. If only things were that easy for him, unfortunately...falling in love is never easy, especially if you just met the person and in this case...he's not human. Whether it was a lack of paying attention or fate guiding him...Koki didn’t know, but his feet carried him towards the ship Bem lives in. Looking up he sees the guy sitting top side and watching the water lap gently against the ship. He climbs up and walks over.
“ Hey Bem....I’m sorry I forgot you lived here. Can’t sleep either, huh? Its just you and me...you can leave the hat off.” Koki asks sitting down next to him.
“ Its okay, Koki. No....I can’t. So, what brings you over this way?” The youkai asks and puts his hat back down.
“ To be honest....you. I can’t stop thinking about you and I won’t lie, I think I’ve fallen for you. Anyway, its official...I now own that pet shop I was interested in buying from the owner. I just needed a bit of help from the bank and I open the shop back up in a few days. Tomorrow night, I need to tell my boss about it and I’ll free of that place.”
“ That’s good Koki. I take it your boss knew that you were looking for another job then?”
“ Yes, my last day is tomorrow anyway so it all works out. Well...I’ll leave you to your thoughts now.”
Koki gets up and starts walking away when Bem calls him back, deciding that he is, in fact, in love with the human.
“ Yeah...need something?” Koki asks.
“ I...I think...I feel the same way.” Bem admits.
Smiling Koki walks closer and presses his lips against Bem’s, licking his bottom lips asking for entrance. Bem lets go of the breath he didn’t know he was holding in allowing Koki to slip his tongue in. One or both moan as Bem responds to the kiss, his tongue caught in a slow dance with Koki’s. He pulls the youkai closer so there’s no more space between them, never breaking the kiss. Neither one is sure how long they stood there, kissing under the light of the full moon and starry sky. They pull apart finally and panting slightly Koki smiles at Bem...though the same melancholy look brightens, if only just a tiny bit.
“ You don’t have to keep your guard up around me so much. Instead of living in the ship, want to stay at my place?” Koki offers, mainly because he doesn’t think he could sleep tonight or any other night here after without Bem being close to him.
“ Sure. So this is what falling in love feels like?” Bem asks.
“ I’m glad. Yeah, I guess so. I haven’t fallen in love with anyone for a long time...I kinda forgot what it felt like.” Koki says helping Bem collect what little stuff he brought with him from Chiba after the other two became human and left him. They get back to Koki’s flat and head inside, Rai meets them at the door.
“ I have a spare bedroom right next to mine that you can put your stuff in.” Koki says.
Bem nods and puts his bag in the room and then comes out a few minutes later looking for Koki. He doesn’t find him until he until he’s walking back to his room, catching Koki pulling off his trainers and jeans and changing into a pair of shorts to sleep in. Koki feels eyes on the back of his head and turns to see Bem staring at him. He smiles at the Youkai.
“ Are you going to sleep in those clothes or did you want to wear something more comfortable? You can relax here...no one’s going to come in and kick you out.” Koki asks.
“ I would like that.” Koki hands him a pair of shorts and tank top.
Bem surprises Koki, and himself, by giving him a kiss before heading into his room to change. Koki lays down after brushing his teeth and waits for sleep to over take him. He’s awake for a better part of an hour, when it feels like something’s missing. The bed just doesn’t feel right and then he remembers the kiss they shared and the feel of having Bem in his arms. He smiles at the memory. All of a sudden Bem walks in and stands in the door way of Koki’s bedroom, Koki looks over.
“ Come on....” Koki says with a smile, patting the spot next to him.

“ I have all day and most of the night. He doesn’t get there until 10pm or so. Did you have something in mind?” Koki replies, scooting down to place soft kisses up and down Bem’s neck.
“ No...not really.” Bem hums as he gets lost in the morning spell of Koki’s lips.
“ Good.” Koki breaths against his neck and continues what he was doing, traveling down to Bem’s shoulder and then back up to his neck.

They finish breakfast and after Koki cleans up the kitchen. He leashes Rai-chan and they head out in different directions. Where he finds the list of the foods each animal gets and how often they’re fed and how often the cages get cleaned. “ Did you hear....Tanaka finally quit.”
“ Yeah I heard that tomorrow’s his last day. I was always surprised he never moved to the day shift, after the hell those guys put him through.”

“ Not to mention all the pranks and ‘accidents’ the others set up. After he hurt his back and had to have surgery, I thought he was never coming back. “ So why didn’t you change shifts then?”
“ Overnights paid better.” Koki shrugs.
“ Oh and the day crew have something planned for you tomorrow, its a good surprise.” Bem says walking behind the counter and kissing Koki softly but passionately.
“ I still have work to do here, but we can finish that tonight at home. You are coming back to the loft, aren’t you?”
“ Yeah, I will.”
Koki smiles at that and gets back to cleaning the place up. Bem leaves Koki to his work and follows up on a lead he picked up on his walk. He heads to what looks like a deserted laboratory, he walks in to search for clues.

Bem nods and puts his bag in the room and then comes out a few minutes later looking for Koki. “ Are you going to sleep in those clothes or did you want to wear something more comfortable? You can relax here...no one’s going to come in and kick you out.” Koki asks.
“ I would like that.” Koki hands him a pair of shorts and tank top.
Bem surprises Koki, and himself, by giving him a kiss before heading into his room to change. Koki lays down after brushing his teeth and waits for sleep to over take him. He’s awake for a better part of an hour, when it feels like something’s missing. The bed just doesn’t feel right and then he remembers the kiss they shared and the feel of having Bem in his arms. He smiles at the memory. All of a sudden Bem walks in and stands in the door way of Koki’s bedroom, Koki looks over.

“ I didn’t want you to get angry over something that happened in the past. What I went through happened, its over with now. What’s the point of holding a grudge. I’m sorry, I should’ve told you.” Koki says and he meant it.
“ So why didn’t you change shifts then?”
“ Overnights paid better.” Koki shrugs.
“ Oh and the day crew have something planned for you tomorrow, its a good surprise.” Bem says walking behind the counter and kissing Koki softly but passionately.
“ I still have work to do here, but we can finish that tonight at home. You are coming back to the loft, aren’t you?”
“ Yeah, I will.”
Koki smiles at that and gets back to cleaning the place up. Bem leaves Koki to his work and follows up on a lead he picked up on his walk. He heads to what looks like a deserted laboratory, he walks in to search for clues.
