Summary: Koki is a 22 year old human guy, living a normal but unsatisfied and restless life, gets pulled into Japan's feudal past by an otherworldly creature, where he crosses paths with a dog like half-demon named Inu-Kame. There he discovers his past and future and that not all legends are the work of the imagination. Can ancient history give Koki the answers he's looking for and settle his restless heart? Will price be too high to pay for such answers and will he be able to bare the cost?
A/N: Later chapters Koki and only Koki, will start calling "Inu-Kame" just Kame, everyone else will still refer to him as 'Inu-Kame'

Some locals were in the woods surrounding their village collecting the various things they’re running low on, when a priestess and her helper appeared from no where.

“ You feel an evil presence?”

“ There is a spiritual miasma in this vicinity.”

“ Have there been any eerie occurrences lately?” the Priestess inquires.

“ My dear Lady! Really!” the man attached to the tree says.

“ You won’t find a more peaceful place for leagues around.” one the older villagers says.

“ Especially since the Lord Priest arrived.” another says.

“ Priest you said?” the Priestess replies, then she sees the man that the villagers told her about, ' What?! That man...he’s not of this world!' She thinks in horror.

Meanwhile Master Ren is out collecting herbs with some of the local village children, who were asking which ones were herbs and which ones weren’t.

“ Come, everyone. You have much to learn of the Lore of Herbs.” Ren calls the children to him.

“ Master Ren, you know everything!” One child says in awe.

“ That Priest is a demon? But Lady Seikai, to my eyes he is as human as any...”

“ Then your eyes need better training.” The priestess rebuffs. They are spying from behind the tree nearest Ren and the children.

“ We are honored.” Ren says speaking to the two women.

“ I did not realize you had notice our presence.” Lady Seikai replies.

“ You have been watching me for quite sometime.” Ren says.

“ What else could I do, but gaze upon one so handsome?”

“ I’m flattered.”

Then a mysterious scroll drops to the ground. Ren and the children see it.

“ Would be you be so kind as to pick that up?”

“......” Ren just looks at the item on the ground.

“ That, you see, is a sutra of Exorcism...and should a demon touch it, its true form will instantly be exposed.”

Ren bends down to touch the scroll and picks it up, he hands over to the Priestess.

“ Ah..A very useful sutra it is. Hold it tighter, hm?”

‘Nothing happened!’ She thinks as she touches her sutra. Then she feels something pass at high speed through her body.

“ Now, let us go everyone.” Ren says to the children.

“ Yes sir!” the children chorus and follow Ren back to the village, leaving the Lady Seikai and her helper behind.

‘ What?! Countless beads pierced my flesh...passed through me..?!’ she thinks.

“ Lady Seikai, what is the matter?”

“ Look...the scroll has been wiped clean!” She says, both women are surprised.

‘ He repulsed the writing of the sacred sutra and pierced me with them instead?! I thought he was a demon...but he is something far stronger.’ she thinks then shouts, “ Master Priest! I do not know what unfinished business keeps you here..but this world is not yours! Go back to your proper realm!”

Ren just looks over his shoulder, then keeps walking. Ren drops the children off at the village then goes back to where he was hiding out at. But one of the young boys he was teaching follows..calling his name to gain his attention.

“ Master Ren? Will you teach us more about the plants and flowers tomorrow, please?” he asks. grabbing Ren’s hand.

“.....” Ren says nothing.

“ Master Ren? You’re not going away, are you?” he asks.

“ Riko..Do you like me?” Ren asks.

“ Yes, m’lord. I love you.”

“ I’m happy, I think of you as my little brother.”

“ Re-really?!” Riku was really happy at this.

“ I do.” Ren says and the little boy runs off to his home before his parents worry.

Ren Keeps going wishing that he could’ve stayed just little while longer, but the time has come again...for him to move on.

Meanwhile:

“ A demon that steals the souls of young girls who die..?” Miroku asks.

“ Yes, Before the soul can ascend to heaven...many people have witnessed it. It is tragic enough that the princess has passed, but if her precious soul should be stoled as well...” the Lord laments.

“ Be at ease my Lord. I swear to protect the princess’ soul at all costs.” Miroku says and then gets InuKame and Koki to watch over the princess’ body while he finishes things up.

“ I don’t really get it.” InuKame grumbles annoyed with the monk, “ Why do we have to watch the dead? Where in the hell did that monk and fox demon squirt get off to anyway?”

“ Maybe he’s just trying to be considerate, InuKame.” Koki says, sitting on the floor with his back against the wall.

“ Don’t tell me you’re scared all of a sudden?” InuKame snorts.

“ Only where your concerned but that’s not my point. My point, InuKame, is that ever since Shippo walked up on us the other night when I almost kissed you...he’s never let you live it down or given you the space you needed right after that. So maybe this Miroku’s way of trying to make up for Shippo’s actions. That and he’s hoping the Lord of this manor has another daughter just as lovely as the deceased princess...the lech.” Koki says staring the body and hoping the thing doesn’t come to life. Scooting closer to InuKame as he does so.

“ Hmph!” InuKame snorts.

“ It almost feels like it could start moving any second, so..” Koki and InuKame stare at the body.

“ That’s all?” InuKame asks thinking any number of thoughts opposite to Koki’s actually thinking about.

“ What do you mean, ‘that’s all’? Just exactly what did you think I was thinking about?” Koki asks suspiciously.

“ Hey! You’re the one that scooted closer to me!”

“ And you’re the one having dirty thoughts!”

“ Do you try to confuse me?”

“ I can’t believe you’re thinking things like that and at a time like this!”

While the half demon and human argue as always, Miroku tries to leave the other sister...but its proving to be slightly difficult.

“ I must start heading back. I’m concerned about your honored sister’s soul.” He tells the surviving sister but she just latches on to him like a leach.

“ Please don’t go noble monk! I’m frightened!” she pleads.

“ I guess this one takes after her dad.” Shippo sighs.

All of a sudden Shippo and Miroku hear a shout come from where the InuKame and Koki were watching over the dead princess. The body comes up off the pylon as a soul stealer demon comes to suck the very soul from the her dead body.

“ Finally! It showed its self!” InuKame shouts pulling Tetsusiaga and killing the demon.

With the demon now gone, the soul goes back to its body and said body falls back to the floor.

“ The soul is safe..”

“ Is that it? That’s pitiful.”

“ Wait! Its not alone! There’s more of them outside!” Koki surprised. ‘The stolen souls. I wonder where they’re taking them.’ he thinks as Miroku and Shippo finally show up. Miroku, InuKame noticed, looked flustered.

“ Quickly! We must follow them!” the monk shouts.

“ ...And what have you been up to?” InuKame asks purely out of amusement. He doesn’t care what the monk was doing as long as he didn’t try doing whatever it was with Koki.

While InuKame, Miroku and Koki go after the soul carrying demons. Riku sees Ren walking away from the village.

“ Ren looked so sad today, I bet it was because of that priestess we met. There’s Master Ren.” His curiosity getting the better of him and since he can’t sleep, he decided to follow the Priest.

He sees Ren raise a hand in the air, next he sees the same soul carrying demons swirl around him, giving him the souls they’ve collected. While he’s collecting the souls the Priestess from earlier shows up.

“ Can you not find no rest in death?” she asks Ren

Ren just looks at her.

“ You’re dead, are you not?”

“ Can you not over look my presence in this world?”

“ No, I can not!” The priestess uses her soul bond dragon, trapping Ren with in its body, “ Now sleep and find peace...I shall save your tortured soul!”

Ren smirks at that comment and shouts, “ Save my soul? A little priestess like yourself is going to save my soul!” he breaks free and sends part of the dragon sutra that bound him back at the Priestess...hitting her in the throat, killing her. Her friend ran for her life and Riku was scared.

“ If only you had let me be, then I wouldn’t have had to kill you.” Ren says as the woman grabs his ankle.

“ What..are you plotting? This world of time belongs to the living, not the dead. You...your time has stopped. The two cannot cross..you cannot be here...you..poor..soul.” the woman that Ren killed speaks no more.

Ren hears rustling in the bushes by a large tree, he turns and sees Riku watching him.

“ Riku..you were...watching?” Ren asks the child.

Riku says nothing as shrinks back the closer Ren gets to him. Only to flinch when Ren reaches out to touch his face.

“ I am sorry, I have frightened you..” he says sadly and walks away from the little boy who reminded him so much of his brother when they were that age.

“ Master..Ren..” Riku says.

“ Farewell..please forgive me.” Ren says and continues on.

The next day Koki, Shippo, Miroku, and InuKame were eating lunch by the river.

“ Hey come on! Let’s go! We’ve got to rescue those poor people’s souls.” Koki says.

“ So where are we going?” InuKame asks giving Koki an ‘I don’t really care’ look.

“ What do you mean where?!”

“We have managed to lose track of them haven’t we?” Shippo asks sitting on Koki’s backpack.

“ Don’t tell me you don’t care!” Koki says exasperatedly.

“ And what is there to care about? It’s not that as if we’re going to find a jewel shard at the end or anything?” InuKame asks.

“ What about just wanting to help people for once?” Koki sighs.

“ Indeed what about it?”

“ Oh that’s right I forgot...you’re too tough for that! Even though you keep playing the hero!” Koki snorts looking away from InuKame.

“ Oi! Don’t you dare insult me!” InuKame shouts, Miroku and Shippo just listen.

“ Being called a ‘hero’ isn’t an insult, alright?” Koki says.

“ You can flatter me all you want but....” InuKame starts but is cut off by Koki.

“ What the...can that be..?”

“ Are you listening me...Koki?!” InuKame asks annoyed.

“ Hey! Its a person!” Shippo says.

Miroku and Koki pull the poor woman from the water. they lay her on the ground with her head propped up. The woman groans in her unconscious state. InuKame sits behind them.

“ She’s only unconscious. She sounds like she’s having a nightmare.” Koki says as they watch over her, making sure she’s okay. She starts to come around and when she sees Koki...

“ Waah!!! Get back! Don’t come near me foul demon!” She shouts, startling Koki out of his skin and making InuKame glare.

“ What the...?” Miroku says.

“ Oh..” The woman says only this.

“ You think Master Koki looks like a demon?” Miroku asks.

“ Well if that isn’t just rude!” Koki snorts.

“ He...he had the form of a man, but he was a terrible creature. That Priest..” She says.

‘ A Priest...who looks like me?’ Koki thinks, while the word along gets InuKame’s attention.

“ That demon repulsed a sacred sutra and slew my Mistress. His name, as least as the children knew it, was Ren.” The woman says.

“ What?!” InuKame says, he grabs the woman, “ You--you’d better not be making this up!” InuKame was a mix of emotions, the most noticeable one was shock.

“ N-not a word...I swear it! He-he summoned and harvested young souls without number.” she continues.

‘Young souls...You mean the demon stealing all those souls...is Ren? But why? It doesn‘t make any sense.’ Koki thinks.

‘Ren..you..you’re behind this?’ InuKame couldn’t believe it.

“ InuKame..we have to fin...” Koki gets cut off.

“ The rest of you leave and go back. This is something I have to do on my own.” InuKame says and takes off before anyone can stop him.

With the half demon gone Koki grabs his back pack and heads in the opposite direction.

“ Shouldn’t we go after him?” Shippo asks Koki.

“ There’s no point and he’s right. Besides, I’m sure he still loves Ren. So its probably best if I..we’re not there.” Koki answers.

“ Wait, wait, didn’t InuKame demon hunting?!” Shippo asks from his perch on Koki’s shoulder.

“ I think I understand..”

“ Understand what?” Koki asks.

“ A man he loved long ago may have changed beyond recognition. If that is the case, he may not want strangers to see him in that condition. Of course, he may be hoping Ren’ll turn out not to be as evil as he thought..If it were me, I would probably go back to him t--” Then a chill so cold causes Miroku to shut up and Shippo to become frightened.

“ Oh...would you?” Koki glares and keeps going.

“ Is it just me or did the air take on a sudden chill..?” Miroku asks Shippo.

“ If its you, I must be feeling sympathy chills..” Shippo replies.

‘Now I’m annoyed, especially after what he told me a few days ago.’ Koki thinks as the monk and fox demon catch up.

“ Um, Master Koki?”

“ What?”

“ Shall we pursue InuKame?” the monk asks.

“ Follow him? Why would I want to...huh? This demon energy...” Koki stops speaking when Ren’s demons show up.

“ We must follow it!” Miroku shouts.

Koki, Miroku and Shippo take off into the forest following the Soul Hunters that Ren uses. They are running for a long while when Shippo asks...

“ H-how far are we going to chase it?”

“ Why don’t you ask the demon that?!” Miroku answers, before him and Shippo run into what feels like a solid wall...yet invisible.

“ Its a shield...we can’t get through!”

“ Hey...where’s Koki?” Shippo gasps.

Koki just keeps running and almost slips down the hill if not for a tree he managed to grab just in time.

“ Whoa! That was close.” He breaths a sigh of relief.

He turns to warn the monk and Shippo but he finds that he’s alone. He starts walking and finds a hidden slick spot and goes crashing down the hill. He slides to a stop at the bottom, looking up he sees Ren resting in a tree as his body takes in the souls that were being gathered.

“ Ren....so it really was you.” Koki whispers.
