Summary: Koki is a 22 year old human guy, living a normal but unsatisfied and restless life, gets pulled into Japan's feudal past by an otherworldly creature, where he crosses paths with a dog like half-demon named Inu-Kame. There he discovers his past and future and that not all legends are the work of the imagination. Can ancient history give Koki the answers he's looking for and settle his restless heart? Will price be too high to pay for such answers and will he be able to bare the cost?
A/N: Later chapters Koki and only Koki, will start calling "Inu-Kame" just Kame, everyone else will still refer to him as 'Inu-Kame'

Getting tired of hearing InuKame and the monk go back and forth over whether or not Miroku touched Koki on purpose. Koki drags InuKame away from the other two and has a talk with him.

“ InuKame..what is your problem?”

“ I told him to stop touching you and he kept doing it.”

“ He’s not touching me like you and your jealousy think he is. He just handed me the jewel shard and the hat that I dropped, that’s all. So just stop it alright? I have no interest in that lech, you know that.”

While the two are walking, someone else is watching from the shadows of the bushes. When the stranger sees Koki..it confuses him.

‘That guy..could it be Ren? No, that bastard died fifty years ago and took the jewel with him. Then why, why when nothing escapes the eyes of Naraku..why did not see him?’ he thinks as he watches them from a distance. Then he sees Koki looking in his direction.

“ There’s someone over there! He’s got jewel shards too!” Koki says all of a sudden.

InuKame and Miroku look where Koki was pointing and take off in that direction. Naraku tries to get away but his path his cut off by InuKame and Koki to his front and Miroku and the old Priest behind him.

‘So this is him.’ Miroku thinks to himself.

“ I thought you’d be here. Naraku, I presume?” InuKame asks, as Naraku looks and sees Miroku and Master Takahashi behind him. “ Before I cut your throat, tell me just what is it that you have against me?” The half demon continues.

“ Heh, you want to know? I’ll tell you..about the day fifty years ago, when Naraku was born. You want to know why I loath you so much InuKame? You can’t die peacefully without that, can you?” Naraku taunts.

“ Who are you? What are you?” InuKame asks.

“ Takahashi, the years have done their work I see.” Naraku says to the old Priest.

“ You know me? Then it IS true!” Master Takahshi is surprised, but he’s not at the same time.

“ You’re Onigumo...the spider demon! The wounded bandit Ren was sheltering!” InuKame shouts.

“ Indeed, indeed..Naraku came to life in Onigumo’s cave 50 years ago. Thanks in great part to Ren...because his mystic powers were getting weaker by the day. Until they could no longer protect a wounded man against the local demons. And Do you know why InuKame..?” InuKame says nothing, Naraku continues his story.

“ Because Ren fell in love with a certain worthless half-demon, and so lowered himself to the level of a weak mortal man! And onigumo..that over stuffed bundle of evil thoughts...held base desires for Ren within him. Within that paralyzed body of the bandit those feelings did nothing but stew and simmer. And began to boil until they drew to him the demons in the air all about. ‘ Free me from this worthless shell...and my soul is yours! Only give me a body..A man’s body. Give me the strength to steal the Sacred Jewel and make Ren mine!’ was all he said.”

“ Did Ren really...help such a demon?” Koki asks himself.

“ So the demons became one and I, Naraku, was born.” Naraku finishes his tale.

“ What, then, happened to Onigumo?” Takahashi asks.

“ Heh. His body and soul were devoured on the spot. But they were excellent fodder.” Naraku answers.

“ Then why did you ensnare InuKame and Ren?” Koki asks, his blood boiling.

“ Isn’t it obvious? To taint Ren’s heart with hatred and spite, so that the jewel would absorb the blood of malice. Two who had trusted each other, would only now despise and kill one another. What purer evil could be found to taint the jewel? The more profound the love had once was, the more powerful the hatred and the more evil the jewel. You must’ve truly despised him, InuKame..” Naraku laughs.

“ You..” InuKame says

“ All that was left was for Ren to prize himself so much, that he would pray his desires into the Sacred Jewel. I waited and waited for those prayers, so that I could then rip him apart and snatch the tainted jewel. But that accursed bastard went peacefully to his death taking the jewel with him!”

‘ Now I get it. Ren didn’t want to go on living, he chose his death to follow InuKame.’ Koki thinks.

“ Thanks to him, the jewel slipped through my fingers! And all over a you! A stinking half-demon! What a joke! What a stupid man! Now that the jewel is back..I will have all that desire.” Naraku finishes.

“ You dare..you dare insult Ren?! You’ve spoken the last words you’ll ever make!” Now pissed, InuKame charges Naraku.

A large tree cracks in half and Naraku jumps over everyone, causing the tree to land between InuKame and Miroku. He loses the hide he was wearing and they see his human guise.

“ Well, well, Miroku the monk. You look just like your grandfather with that dissipated face..” Naraku taunts.

“ Leave my face out of this!” Miroku shoots back.

“ Enough talk! I’ll kill you!” InuKame shouts.

Naraku uses his demonic aura to cause the earth to melt away and trap InuKame as he steps inside.

“ The earth is melting!” Shippo shouts jumping on Master Takahashi’s shoulder to get out of the way.

“ Move back! I’ve heard of the corrosive power of evil...but damn!” Miroku says.

“ InuKame...where is he?” Koki asks worriedly.

‘ I won’t let him get away!’ InuKame thinks as he pushes through the acidic aura, then Koki sees him.

“ InuKame!” Koki shouts.

“ InuKame, come back! Your body will be eaten away!” Miroku shouts.

“ Naraku! You will not go free!” InuKame says jumping through the aura.

“ You thoughtless worm! Did you really think that you could step inside my aura and come out alive..?” Naraku asks then he gets a nasty shock.

InuKame lands in front of him, clothes torn but other wise unharmed.

“ NO!” Naraku shouts.

“ Stop there!” InuKame shouts, ‘Now I got him!’ he thinks. “ What the...you..”

Naraku disappears but InuKame manages to catch sight of the spider mark on Naraku’s back.

“ InuKame...he’s alive!” Shippo shouts, actually happy.

“ A spider on his back, you say?” Miroku asks.

“ Yeah, like a scar from an old burn.” InuKame says.

“ Didn you mention that the bandit of Onigumo had suffered burns all over his body?” Koki asks.

“ He did..do you believe that that mark is the last vestige of Onigumo..?” The old priest asks.

‘ The spider on his back...Naraku’s mark.’ InuKame thinks.

Two hours later Koki and Shippo find InuKame sitting in a nearby tree lost in his own thoughts. He was going to say something but decided it was best to just leave InuKame be for the time being.

“ Aren’t you going to say anything, Koki? You agreed to come back because he asked you to and now he’s balled up in a tree ignoring you.” The little fox asks.

“ Nah, its better to leave him alone when he’s like this.” Koki says and walks back to where Miroku and the old Priest were.

‘ I will find him and I will kill him! Its the only thing I can do for Ren now.’ InuKame thinks, then he sees Koki separating himself from the group and tracks him to a nearby creek.

‘ Nothing really changed did it?’ Koki thinks, skipping stones across the water.

“ Koki...” InuKame starts but Koki cuts across him.

“ You’re going to avenge Ren’s death, by hunting down and killing Naraku, right?” he asks the half demon, not bothering to turn around.

“ Yes.”

“ Do what you have to do, InuKame.” Koki says turning and walking past the half-demon, he stops for a minute and asks, “ Was it a mistake for me to come back with you?”

InuKame doesn’t have an answer for that, so Koki keeps walking. He doesn’t get very far before he finds himself pinned to a tree by....

“InuKame..” Koki forces out as all the oxygen in his lungs comes out with his words.

Neither one saying a word, yet words are being spoken by both human and half-demon. Their eyes tell what their hearts already know and yet don’t speak. InuKame eventually let’s Koki go and they start walking again.

“ I meant what I said back in your apartment. I do want you around, Koki, but I....” InuKame says then falls silent.

“ I understand, InuKame. I’ll help you get Naraku just like I said I’d help you track down the shards.” Koki says, knowing what the half-demon was going to say.

After dinner Shippo, the old Priest and Miroku bed down for the night...only Koki and InuKame are wake. They’re just sitting around the fire and InuKame listens while Koki is telling him about the good opportunity that landed in his lap while he was back in his own time period. InuKame thinks its good that Koki’s life became better then maybe his family will see that their treatment of their own flesh and blood didn’t hold Koki back any.

“ That’s go...” InuKame was about to say something, when he feels someone watching them.

“ What’s wrong, InuKame?” Koki asks before shouting, “ Watch out!”

InuKame dodges as an arrow flies past his head. Pissed he looks at the spot where the arrow came from and sees someone that he hasn’t seen for the past fifty years. All of a sudden Ren let’s loose another arrow, this time aimed at Koki. Koki barely has time to move out of the way to keep the arrow from piercing his body, luckily it just clipped his arm.

“ What the hell?!” Koki shouts, standing up and holding his bleeding arm. InuKame’s standing in front of him, Tetsusiaga drawn.

“ It was Ren, he never fought in the open as you do Koki. My brother was known for hiding in the shadows and killing demons from the trees or bushes.” Master Takahashi says, Koki’s shouting had woken him up...the other two are out like lights.

“ I know that’s you! I’m the one you want, not him!” InuKame shouts causing Ren to make his appearance.

“ How could you betray me like that, InuKame? I trusted you!” Ren shouts sending another arrow InuKame’s way who blocks with it sword, shoving Koki out of the way in the process.

“ He didn’t! It was Naraku! He tricked you both, just to get his evil hands on the Sacred Wishing Jewel!” Koki shouts back trying to get Ren to understand.

“ Stop this brother! Koki speaks the truth.” the old Priest says, Ren lowers his weapon as Koki raises his.

“ Silence! I was there...I know what happened! InuKame betrayed me and so he’ll betray you. We’ll meet again InuKame and I will kill you, even if I have to kill my reincarnation to get to you.” Ren says and leaves the group in peace.

Koki sits back down, his arm still bleeding where the arrow made contact with it. The old Priest goes back to bed, while InuKame just watches the area where Ren was standing. Satisfied that Ren’s gone, InuKame relaxes and then notices Koki’s wound.

“ Your arm...its bleeding.” InuKame tells Koki.

“ Huh...oh yeah.” Koki looks at his arm, “ That’s where Ren’s arrow clipped me, I’ll be fine. Hand me that box in my bag, will you?” he asks InuKame since his backpack was next to the half-demon.

“ Here.” InuKame hands him the box.

Koki opens it up and after applying a little ointment, he puts a bandage over it. He shuts the box and hands it back to InuKame, who puts it away. Koki stifles a yawn.

“ So what do you plan on doing about Ren, now that he’s back from grave and hell bent on revenge?” Koki asks getting comfortable in his sleeping bag, “ Here. I want you to hold this at night, while I’m asleep.” he hands InuKame their half of the jewel.

InuKame nods and puts the shard around his neck, and then says, “ I’m not sure Koki. I..” he looks over and sees that Koki was exhausted and fell asleep.

He grabs Koki’s stuff and moves to sit next to the human. He looks down in time to Koki shiver slightly. He places the top part of his cloak of the fire rat over Koki’s chest and whisper, “ I won’t allow him or Naraku to kill you, that much I do know.” he stays up, taking watch while Koki and the others sleep.
