“ If we keep gathering these shards...” Koki pulls the shard from around his neck, “ We’re bound to run into Naraku, right?” Koki asks, Miroku just nods. “ So let’s do it together.” he offers a different solution to the Monk.

“ I don’t know.” Miroku sounds unsure.

“ InuKame has no intention of handing it over, right?” Koki says to the half demon.

“ Not while I live, I don’t!” InuKame says.

“ Its just that I’ve never been good at working well with others.” he explains.

“ But if you don’t defeat Naraku soon you’re going to die, aren’t you?” Koki asks.

“ Master Koki, you’re concerned for me?” Miroku asks.

“ Well yeah..but..” He’s cut off.

“ Then I have a favor to ask of you. Please spend the night with me.” He requests, InuKame gets annoyed.

“ Not on your life!” InuKame shouts standing between the monk and Koki...who just chuckles.

“ In the event that I fail in my mission, I just wanted to know what it would feel like to..you know..” Miroku says.

“ Now that’s one even I have never heard of before!” InuKame shouts while Koki nods in agreement.

“ If I see you touch one hair on Koki’s head..!” he threatens.

‘ InuKame..’ Koki thinks.

“ Oh forgive me. I thought you were only his traveling companion, but of course if you love him...I can’t get anything right, can I?” Miroku says.

“ Listen fool...he’s just a shard detector that’s all!” he shouts.

“ That’s right! InuKame’s interested in someone else!” Koki says, getting annoyed and starting to bicker with InuKame.

“ And they’re going to work together? Yeah, this is going to work out really well.” Miyoga says, sitting on a nearby rock.

After about three hours of walking-Koki was on his bike- they come across a field littered with the dead corpses of not just men, but horses as well. They stop and survey the scene before them.

“ What the hell...?” Koki says, getting down to inspect the bodies.

“ Brutal warfare, maybe?” the monk says.

“ This wasn’t war. Look, InuKame, the livers have been removed from every single body...even the horses.” Koki says, standing up. “ What do you think InuKame...demons?” Koki looks to his half demon companion.

“ I’d say.” was all he said, while Miroku says a small prayer for their souls.

“ This isn’t the work of minor demons, I suspect they possess a shard of the jewel.” The monk says.

‘ He’s right..the smells. Not just blood but ink as well. Yes! The smell of charcoal ink’ InuKame thinks. “ Miroku! Let me tell you this now..I have no intention of being your “comrade” and I’m NOT handing over the shards.” he makes himself very clear.

“ So...the early bird gets the worm, eh? We shall part here, henceforth...I must forge on alone.”  The monk says and leaves.

“ He’s an idiot! We could find all the shards a lot quicker if he’d just work with us instead of against us.” Koki sighs.

“ Eh?! I smell ink!” InuKame says and goes on ahead.

“ Help! Someone! Help me!” someone shouts.

“ Huh--?! So this is the source of the smell?” InuKame was confused.

“ Waah! Please...my-my errand scroll--!” the stranger says.

“ InuKame! Sit!” Koki shouts seeing InuKame accost a normal person.

“ What-are-you-DOING?!” InuKame growls standing up.

“ Keeping you from accosting a normal person!” he says to InuKame before shouting, “ I’m sorry!” to the poor guy running away in fear.

“ What are you so worked up about anyway?” he asks.

“ I told you! In the wake of the demons, the scent of ink lingered on the air!” InuKame responds, “ If we don’t act quickly, that bastard Miroku will steal all the shards!”

“ Uh...Why do you hate him so much?” Koki asks.

“ And you like perverted lechers like him?!” InuKame asks in disbelief instead answering Koki’s question.

“ So what if I do...what’s it to you?” Koki smirks.

“ You..what?!”

“ I’m kidding. I’m just joking, ok?” Koki relents and walks back towards his bike.

“ Tha-that can’t be what he really...?!” InuKame stutters.

“ I said I was JOKING!” Koki shouts and gets back on his bike leaving InuKame where he was.

Meanwhile Miroku wasn’t having much luck in finding the shard(s) either, in fact his luck was worse and he thinks that maybe he should’ve talked Koki into coming with him instead of InuKame.

“ Not one single clue to where a just ONE shard might be...what is this world coming to?” He yawns to himself, then he hears someone shout...

“ Vile, belly crawling worm!”

Miroku walks over and sees two men stomping some poor guy for looking at a woman, “ What’s going on?” he asks a passing villager.

“ How dare you steal a glance at her pristine Highness!” One guy shouts.

“ Thou darest defile such nobility!” Another guy says.

“ I-I had no choice...I couldn’t help it. The Princess is just too beautiful.” he pleads.

“ He’s the painter Kotatsu. Tis said he wandered from the capital at Kyoto.” the villager answered Miroku’s question.

‘Hmm...that painter. I sense there is some evil that possesses him.’ Miroku thinks as the Princess speaks.

“ Desist. Be not cruel in our name.” she says and the men who are two of her guards stop their attack and verbal assault.

“ Its best that the Princess proceeds.” Another one says and they keep walking.

After hearing the princess’s coughing, Miroku knows that her shadow is faint and that if he leaves her be..she won’t live long.'I think my most urgent task is to save the lady’ he thinks, watching the painter slink off. He follows the princess instead of the painter.

“ Hey! Just where do you think you’re going?! I’m trying to explain something to you, you fool.” InuKame says, catching up to Koki.

“ After whatever it was that killed those people, its possible there’s a jewel shard involved.” Koki snorts. “ Fine. what is it?” he asks.

“ That painter...I smelled more than just ink coming from him.”

“ Like what?”

“ Like the smell of blood and liver, he smelled like a demon in guise of a human. Much like Sesshomaru...only not so honest about what he is.” InuKame explains as they start traveling again.

“ My art makes the princess even more of a beauty, those humans are nothing but cattle.” the painter grumbles unknowingly bumping into Koki, InuKame had went off to search in another direction. “ I will make her mine and mine alone...” he’s grabbed by the back of his shirt collar.

“ How about clearing something up for me?” Koki asks.

“ What--? Wh-why attack me..I’m only a painter!”  the guy says.

“ My friend says you stink of human blood and liver!” Koki tells him, as InuKame shows up.

“ Let me be!” the painter shouts and starts to flee. But then turns and opens his clothes and a clawed hand comes out from where his chest should be. Koki and InuKame take a few steps back so the monster that came forth wouldn’t step on them.

‘ Is that...an ogre? Wait...he’s human!’ Koki thinks to himself. As InuKame confronts the beast, the painter tries to slip away.

“ You..stop there!” InuKame shouts, seeing the human getting in a boat that was in the nearby river to get away.

InuKame pulls out his sword and cuts the ogre in half...but what comes out is...

“ You did it! Wait...black blood?!” Koki was confused, even he knows a demon’s blood is red.

InuKame emerges from the fight sitting in a large pool of...“ Its not just blood..but liver and ink!” He says before falling face forwards, passing out cold.

“ InuKame!” Koki shouts and runs over, “ What’s the matter?”

“ His dog-nose is too sensitive...the stench did him in.” Myoga says.

“ Myoga? What are you doing here?” Koki asks, pulling InuKame out of the bloody pool.

“ I was in the area and I was looking for a meal.” he answers before jumping on Koki’s neck and drinking from him. Koki slaps him and asks, “ So how do we wake him up?”

Meanwhile, while Koki’s trying to bring InuKame around. Miroku’s up to his old lecherous habits..again. Oh and he has to save a princess as well.

“ Can you help my daughter?” The old ruler pleads.

“ You say you’re plagued by terrible dreams every night? What are these dreams about?” Miroku asks.

“ Demons..they come ferrying us to an estate unknown this noble personage, where we in a chamber are left alone...and yet we feel something. From somewhere, someone watches and pierces us with a gaze that’s other worldly.” The princess says.

“ Every night the princess’s condition worsens. Lord monk, is my daughter possessed by an unholy entity?” her father asks.

“ It would seem so and it needs to be exorcized immediately or it will kill her. My Lord, might you grant me some time alone with the princess?” Miroku asks, the old man nods and leaves.

“ Be at ease your highness, By Buddha, I swear that I will save you. But..um..”

“ Yes?” she asks.

“ I know its a bit much to ask as compensation..but will your Highness spend the night with me?” he asks, holding her hands and staring at her.

“ I knew it! You say that to everyone that strikes your fancy!” Koki says loudly, gaining the attention of the Princess and the lech Miroku.

“ Well, well...if it isn’t Miroku!” InuKame says from the back of Koki’s bike, he woke up there.

“ Weren’t you supposed to be looking for the jewel shards?” Koki asks, glad that his only competition is a dead guy.

“ Master Koki!” Miroku says.

“ And this was the moron you wanted to join us?!” InuKame asks Koki.

“ Well...you were the one that was unconscious.” Koki snorts.

“ I didn’t think you would find me in this place..” he says.

“ And these two creatures are...?” the Princess asks.

After telling the Princess who they are, she has tea brought to them. Unknowing that the mysterious painter is planning on sending an “escort” to kidnap the her Highness that very night.

“ The guy you’re after is a strange artist, you say.” Miroku says.

“ Yeah, he was a mortal and not a demon himself..but he was manipulating an ogre to do as he wished. So I’m thinking that he’s in possession of one the wishing shards we’re after.” Koki explains, then looks over to see that InuKame was sitting at a distance with his back to them.

“ Oh come on, InuKame! How long do you plan on sulking over there anyway?!” Koki shouts, torn between his amusement at the half-demon’s antics and his annoyance with him.

“ What’s wrong, InuKame?” the monk asks.

“ NOTHING!” InuKame shouts back in huff.

“ What’s the harm in asking the monk for help? You can’t be THAT jealous?” Koki asks.

“ Why...you...” he’s cut off when Miroku grabs Koki’s hands and says...

“ Master Koki....you must’ve searched desperately for me?”

“ Uh no...I just happen to sense the aura of the shards in this area, that’s all.” he answers, yanking his hands from the monk’s. “ You have what..two..three of them on you?” He states.

“ You have good eyes and yes, I do.” Miroku answers.

“ Why didn’t you tell me, idiot!” InuKame shouts.

“ These are the ones I collected already before our paths crossed and if you take them from me then you’re thieves.” the monk dead pans.

“ You stoled our half of the jewel and would dare call us thieves?!” InuKame was outraged, a nerve in his hand twitched and his fingers snapped into a ball.

When Miroku turns his attention back to Koki, InuKame comes up behind him..ready to hit him. Unfortunately for InuKame, Koki saw and shouted ‘SIT’. InuKame hit the floor. Luckily that damn incantation only works when Koki says it. The old man and the princess comes into the room where the three of them were talking.

“ You didn’t forget about my daughter, did you?” the old ruler asks.

“ Of course not. The Princess’s safety is my utmost concern. Since this happens every night to you, I wish for it to happen again. That way I can follow her to the master and get rid of him.” Miroku says.

“ But you can’t use the actual princess, Miroku.” Koki protests.

“ I know. That is why I need to find a friend of mine before nightfall. InuKame, can I ask you to go and search him out for me? You’d be much faster than I.” the monk requests.

“ Why should I help you? First you steal from us and then you--” InuKame says.

“ InuKame.” Koki says and the half demon a look that asks ‘Please? We can’t let the princess die’.

“ Fine! What’s his name?” InuKame asks, while Koki just smiles.

“ Shippo. He’s a fox demon, he’s just a child but he can alter his appearance.” Miroku describes the little guy and InuKame leaves.

InuKame goes out in search of the little fox demon when he Koki catches up to him.

“ What do you want? I thought you were with that lech?” InuKame asks, his jealousy evident in his tone.

“ I came to help, but if you really want me to stay with Miroku....” Koki trails off, InuKame says nothing, though his eyes makes his wish very clear...he wants Koki to stay with him and not go back until they found the fox demon child.

“ Oh he did say that Shippo, was out for revenge against the demons that killed his father so he might try to attack us.” Koki tells him.

They are walking for what seems like hours when a large pink balloon like thing with very large eyes, appears in front of the tree Koki was resting against.

“ Give me the jewel shards! Or feel my wrath!” it says to Koki.

“ What the....” Koki starts but all of a sudden his vision goes black. On the edge of his conscious he hears InuKame shout his name.

He wakes up a few minutes later to the sounds of arguing, and with InuKame holding their half of the shard. It was then that Koki decides to carry it in his jeans pocket, it was too noticeable hanging around his neck...especially with the tank top he’s wearing.

“ InuKame...what happened?” he asks, standing up and walking over.

“ It seems you found that lech’s little friend, or thief would be more accurate. He knocked you out with his fox magic and tried to take off with the jewel shard.” InuKame says, handing it back to Koki, who puts it in his pocket.

“ But I need it! I need it to kill the demons that killed my dad!” Shippo says.

“ Is your name Shippo?” Koki asks, kneeling down to the little fox’s level, Shippo nods.

“ Your monk friend, Miroku, was looking for you. He needs your help in rescuing a princess. If you help him, we’ll try to find the ones that killed your family..alright?” Koki offers, InuKame just turns his nose in the air.

“ Okay, I’ll help him.” Shippo agrees and they head back to where Miroku was waiting for them.

No sooner do they get back, a trip that was made all the faster because InuKame kept trying to kick the fox...Shippo kept going after Koki’s pocket that held the jewel shard, does InuKame pick the little fox up and tosses him in the monks direction.

“ Here....we found the whelp.” he glares.

“ Sit boy!” Koki says after seeing InuKame toss Shippo across the room, “ Rather he found us, he tried to take our shard from me.” Koki says, sitting down and putting it back around his neck.

“ Will you stop doing that?!” InuKame asks annoyed as he stands back up.

“ Only when you stop being so violent to those that are not even half as strong as you are.” Koki retorts.

Shippo sees that InuKame is subdued by the word ‘sit’, so he decides to try and command him to sit next time InuKame does something mean to him.

“ Anyway, Shippo. A demon escort is going to come for the princess tonight and these nightly attacks are taking a toll on her health, I need you to impersonate the princess so we can track you and the escort back to the one who controls them. Will you do it?” miroku asks.

“ Sure.” The little fox agrees and when he sees Koki pass InuKame a bag of chips to try..his stomach growled.

While InuKame was deciding if he wanted to try them, Shippo snuck over and tried to make a grab for the chips.  InuKame catches him and snatches the bag out of his reach and bops the little guy on the head...hard.

“ OW! That hurt!” Shippo shouts.

“ Oh yeah...what are you going to do about it?” InuKame asks as he moves across the room.

‘ Fine. I’ll just command him to sit and then take his food’ Shippo thinks just InuKame stands up.

“ SIT!” Shippo shouts, the others just look at him. ‘ He didn’t hit the ground, I’ll try again.’, “ I said...SIT!” he tries again.

“ Sorry kid, that only works when he says it.” InuKame smiles smugly and points at Koki.

“ Are you hungry Shippo?” Koki asks, Shippo nods, “ here you go.” Koki smiles and tosses him another bag of chips from his back pack.

“ Thanks and I’m sorry about earlier.” Shippo apologizes.

It was nightfall and with real princess in hiding, Shippo takes her place...Miroku and Koki hide.

“ It shouldn’t be long now.” Miroku says.

“ Yeah.” was all Koki said as InuKame joins them in the bushes.

“ You’re going to help me with this, InuKame?” the monk asks.

“ Don’t get excited, that’s not why I’m here.” the half-demon answers. ‘ That smell...its coming near again...the smell of that painter’ he thinks as his nose picks up the scent of blood, liver and ink.

They look up just in time to see a covered cart being pulled by a multi-eyed ox and a fairly large number of demons surrounding it, they see the princess waiting for them. They help her in and then take off into the night.
