Koki went back to his world only long enough to do some work, so he can keep his apartment. While he was at home, he was putting some clothes, medicines and food in a back pack to take back with him and he made sure to take the sketches he was working on for the new game he’s designing as well. He pays his bills and rent for the month and goes to head back to the old well, when Riku shows up at his door, sweaty and out of breath.
“ Koki!” he shouts running towards his friend as Koki goes to lock his door.
“ What’s the matter?” Koki says, taken aback.
“ You have to help me Koki. Can I hide out at your place for a few days?”
“ Wha...yeah sure.” Koki opens his door and lets Riku in, and winds up by being pulled back inside. Once Koki’s inside Riku locks the door.
“ Want to tell me what in the hell is going on, Riku?” Koki asks impatiently. He hasn’t got time for this and someone’s waiting for him.
“ Well, you know my brother Jun got mixed up with wrong people,” Koki nods, “ as I was coming out of the jewelry store where I was buying an engagement ring for Rina, they cornered me and told me that if Jun didn’t show his face around their hideout soon that I was the one that was going to...you know..” Riku swallowed.
“ But no one knows where he’s at, least of all you. But as much as I would love to stay, I have to go...he’s waiting for me and its been a week already. I promised him I’d be back as soon as possible.” Koki says and gets up to leave.
“ Koki...Can I go with you?” Riku asks, knowing full well to where and whom Koki was talking about.
“ I-I don’t think so, Riku. I think the only ones that can use that well are me and InuKame. That well responds to only those who, like me, have mystical abilities and...” Riku cuts him off.
“ What about ‘him’? He can travel through that well too.” Riku says, slightly jealous of, in his opinion, Koki’s good fortune to do something he’s always dreamed of doing since he was little.
“ He’s a demon...well half demon, and we have a connection of sorts. I’m sorry, but I really must go now. Hide out here for a bit and if anything strange happens call the cops.”
Koki goes to open his door when Riku says, “ Why is he so important to you all of a sudden? From everything you’ve told me, he hates you...so why go through so much for one guy?”
“ He’s been hurt by humans, especially Ren, way too much. I want InuKame to believe me when I tell him that I’m not like the one that hurt him, and that I really am telling him the truth. I’ll be back soon Riku and be careful.”
“ You’re falling for him, aren’t you?!” Riku calls just as Koki shuts and locks his door.
With his backpack on his shoulder, he heads out into the park and to the old well. Once there he finds it, and he jumps in. He comes out on the other side only to run into InuKame sitting under a nearby tree. He smiles and walks over, InuKame was asleep.
“ Hey wake up, I’m back.” Koki says tapping the half demon on the shoulder.
“ Hmmph....its about time you got back. What took you so long?” he asks grumpily. ‘ So he came back like he promised he would’ he thinks as he stands and stretches.
“ He was waiting for you for a week Koki. He wasn’t sure if you’d come back or not.” Myoga says.
“ Don’t tell me you’ve waited by this well for a week?!” Koki was surprised. “ Anyway, I told you that I had work to catch up on, bills and rent to pay and Riku came by trying to get me to bring him with me.” He explains while InuKame inspects his backpack.
“ What’s this?” he asks eventually.
“ Just clothes, food, medicines and some sketches I need to do.” Koki tells him.
Koki and InuKame are walking, when Koki senses another jewel shard to the north of the old Priest’s village. Koki tells InuKame as much and they head north.
It was midday and the sun was insanely hot and it didn’t help that Koki had a black button up shirt on. Thankfully he brought his tank tops with him and that’s what he had on currently along with his jeans and sneakers. They were resting by a lake and Koki had made a fire to prepare lunch, it was just instant stuff but it was still food.
“ Is it done yet?” InuKame asks impatiently.
“ Here” Koki shoves a cup of instant noodles in InuKame’s direction.
He sniffs it and then starts eating, he finds that it tastes better than he thought it would. Koki smiles at that and stands up to go and cool off in the lake. He changes into his swimming trunks and goes for a swim. InuKame sees Koki’s own cup of noodles left untouched, not wanting it to go to waste he eats it. Then he remembers Koki telling him that Riku hasn't gotten his family stuff straightened out and that Koki’s ex-sister in law told him that his father passed away and that he wasn’t to show his face at the funeral.
Koki went regardless but no one knew he was there as he stayed in the shadows, and visited his dad’s grave long after the others went home. Koki was always upset over the fact that his family doesn’t want anything to do with him but there was nothing he could do, they even blamed him for Kazunaro’s death...even though he wasn’t at fault and his brother’s wife even told them as much.
Living among humans and with his own mother being human, InuKame understood what loneliness felt like. The only other person besides his own mother that treated him with any kind of decency was Ren. With Koki, InuKame realizes, its the same way. Other than the mother of his two nephews and his nephews, Riku and his family were the only other people that didn’t treat Koki like he was a murderer. What he doesn’t understand is why Koki can’t be angry or hate the people that treated so him badly. InuKame gets up and walks to the river bank, leaving Koki’s bag and bike unattended, and sits down to wait for Koki to get done. He won’t lie to himself and say that he doesn’t find Koki’s body a turn on and that he doesn’t feel a certain pull towards the human. But he’ll never admit it out loud and least of all not to Koki himself.
“ Oh hey InuKame.” Koki says, getting out and drying off.
“ Your food. You didn’t eat it, so I did.” he says to Koki.
“ That’s okay, I wasn’t hungry anyway.” Koki admits.
“ Are you sure there’s a shard this way? We should’ve found it already.” he asks Koki.
“ Yes, I am. Just because we haven’t found it as quickly as you’d like, doesn’t mean that we won’t ever find it. Its called patience young grasshopper.” Koki quips.
“ Grasshopper? What are..” InuKame starts but got cut off by a noise coming from the direction of Koki’s stuff. They stand and look over in time to see someone ride off on Koki’s bike.
“ Oi! Thief! That’s my bike!” Koki shouts.
They get back to where Koki’s bag was just in time to catch a glimpse a of guy wearing a monk’s garments. Koki changes back into his jeans and tank top, storing his damp shorts in a small bag as he’s putting on his socks and shoes, InuKame shoves a small note under Koki’s nose.
“ A note? What kind of thief leaves an apology note before taking someone else’s property?” Koki asks confused, “ None of thieves in my time period would do such a thing.” he continues.
Koki puts the small bag, back into the backpack and that’s when he notices the side pocket was opened. He looked inside and to his horror the jewel shard he was carrying was gone. Then he remembers the note and that it just apologized for stealing the bike, not their jewel shard.
“ InuKame..I’m sorry.” Koki apologized.
“ For what? Its not your fault your metal cart was stolen, though I’m surprised it was seeing as its hard to operate the damn thing. Its not like he got the jewel shard or anything.” InuKame says.
“ It looks like he did. The side pocket I store it in was opened and when I went to check on it, it was gone.” Koki admits.
“ WHAT?! He won’t get away with that!” InuKame shouts and after Koki grabs his bag and weapon, he climbs on InuKame’s back and they race off in the direction of the their little sneak thief.
‘ I have to get that back, when I become a full demon will my heart become stronger so I don’t get lead astray by another man again?’ InuKame thinks as they follow the mysterious thief.
The monk who stole Koki’s bike and the shard he was carrying, stopped at a village to rest and meet the local women folk and to trick them into giving him their most prized possessions as payment of ridding them of demons.
“ He’s such a handsome guy.” the women said as soon as Miroku entered the village.
“ Why don’t you come with us and rest your feet. You must be tired.” One woman says, pulling him towards a quaint little Inn.
A couple of hours later Miroku tries to leave, “ Well I must be going now.” he says.
“ Oh come on, please stay...just a while longer.” one of the girls pleads with a cute pout.
“ As you wish, my ladies.” he sighs and thinks ‘ I should’ve brought that guy with me..what a waste, he wasn’t bad looking and I’m not that particular. Oh well.’
InuKame and Koki get to the village and InuKame starts sniffing the ground, trying to separate the thief’s scent from the local villagers.
“ Can you hurry up...a crowd’s forming.” Koki says, seeing a bunch of villagers close in.
“ Well its not that easy...there’s too many scents around here.” InuKame grumbles.
Koki was about to respond when he heard one of the villagers behind them mutter something.
“ A demon...in a village full of folk?” someone asks.
“ Not the guy with the sword surely, but him. He’s a demon! Look at his clothes, those aren’t normal clothes.” someone else says, pointing at Koki.
“ Who..me?!” Koki asks out of shock, don’t they see his companion's dog ears.
“ Serves you right! Ha! I found you, you slimy little thief. Come on Koki...let’s go.” InuKame says and they leave before the villagers could do anything.
As they follow the guy’s scent trail Koki asks, “ Hey maybe he’s not here?”
“ He’s gotta be..”
“ But why would a thief dally in a place like this?”
Then they see Koki’s bike parked next to an Inn with pretty girls coming in and out of it.
“ Hey, my bike. But the shards not here...he must be carrying it with him.” Koki says after searching the small snack compartment on the bike. Then they hear laughing and a woman giggling come from the window. InuKame and Koki barge in after making sure its the right guy.
“ Hey you!”
“ You thie....huh?” Koki stops when the guy grabs his hand and says...
“ You’re the...From Heaven to Hell my spirits soar! the great Buddha writes.” the guy says.
“ Now we settle this!” InuKame says, and swipes at the guy’s head with his claws, “ I’d say you had your chance to make amends peacefully.”
“ Bah. This isn’t something a demon should possess.” he says with a smirk.
“ You think so?” InuKame says rhetorically and charges the man, only watch as they guy jumps off the balcony and takes off.
“ Hey! Get back here! InuKame...there he goes!” Koki shouts and InuKame takes off after the guy.
“ Sorry! But I do not wish to entertain a pointless battle!” Miroku calls over his shoulder.
“ Then I shall give it a point~~Your death!” InuKame shouts, pulling his sword from its scabbard.
Miroku spins and parries InuKame’s attack, catching InuKame by surprise. ‘ He blocked Tetsusaiga! This is no normal monk.’ he thinks.
“ I’ll entertain you, if the point be YOUR death?” he smirks
“ Who in the name of the Seven Hells are you?” InuKame asks, just as Koki and some villagers catch up.
“ My name is Miroku. I use my spiritual gifts to help the needy.” Miroku says.
“ Tis the Lord Monk about to exorcize a demon!” a male villager says next to Koki.
“ A monk who helps the needy?! Save it for the fools, Thief!” InuKame responds.
“ You wound me. Leave the shard of the Sacred Wishing Jewel in my care, InuKame.” he says, showing them that its around his neck.
“ How do you know me?” InuKame asks.
“ I don’t. That’s what your nice looking male friend said.” he explains, InuKame looks over his shoulder.
“ Heh. I’ll make sure you never utter another lie!” InuKame says and swings Tetsusagia again.
“ My you’re a strong one!” Miroku grunts, blocking InuKame with ease.
‘ What the hell?! He’s blocking my attacks so easily’ InuKame thinks as Miroku steps on some loose sticks and nearly falls. He manages to move just in time, though his staff gets stuck in the ground behind InuKame.
“ Now hand over that shard that you’ve got hidden up your sleeve!” InuKame orders. “ Unless you want to die!”
He gets up and runs further away.
“ Trying to escape again, are you?”
“ Good people! Please remove yourselves as far from here as possible...or your lives will be in danger!” Miroku says to the crowd. The villagers and a reluctant Koki take cover.
“ Gotcha! Just give it up, you silver tongued monk! You can’t win this!”
“ Really? As humble as I try to be...I do so hate losing.” The monk smirks and unwraps his hand.
Out of no where, a large and extremely powerful wind kicked up and started sucking everything towards the monk’s hand. Koki just reaches out and manages to grab a small child just in time or he would’ve mostly like been killed. He holds the toddler close to his chest, while he watches from a doorway. InuKame blocks with his sword, anchoring it in the ground. That’s when InuKame notices the void within the monks hand.
“ How long do you think you can hold out, huh InuKame?!” Miroku asks.
‘ Its like a black hole that’s in space, sucking everything within its void. He’s not your average monk, that’s for sure.’ Koki thinks as he puts the child behind a wall. ‘ He really doesn’t want to harm innocent people....I have to stop him.’
“ Are you trying to kill the villagers?!” InuKame shouts.
“ Give up! Once pulled in, you’ll never come out!” The monk warns.
“ Oh shut it! I’ll slice that tunnel off you--arm and all!” InuKame charges.
“ There’s no point..you’ll be sucked in, blade and all!” He warns, “ Eh?! What?”
Koki leaps over InuKame and falls towards Miroku.
“ KOKI?!” InuKame shouts.
“Argh!” Miroku shuts his and wraps the beads around as Koki slams into him.
“ Koki!” InuKame runs over.
“ Owwww!” Koki grunts as he pushes his body off the monk’s, grabbing the jewel shard half as he does so. “ Just like I though...this Rosary...It puts a mystic seal on his hand. He sealed his hand of his own accord.” Koki says as InuKame comes closer.
“ Koki you..you leapt into this on purpose? Why?” InuKame was confused.
“ Listen to me..if Miroku had used the power in his hand, he could’ve killed us a lot sooner. But he didn’t, I’m sure we can work things out if we talk..” Miroku’s hand flinched and grabbed Koki’s ass, Koki froze. Angry...InuKame gets possessive and pulls Koki away.
“ On second thought...Kill him!” Koki says glaring at the monk.
“ What kind of monk are you?!” InuKame growls.
“ Please. Calm yourselves. I can explain.” Miroku says, holding his hands up to show that he doesn’t mean any harm.
“ I’m gathering the shards of this jewel only in order to find and destroy the demon that cursed me...Naraku. This black void in my hand..was cut by Naraku’s curse.” he explains.
“ This Naraku..what kind of demon is it?” Koki asks.
“ Its spirit is strong, and it feasts on humans. Beyond that...”
“ You don’t know?” InuKame cuts across.
“ You’re kidding!” Koki says.
“ Well..you see..the one who actually fought Naraku was my grandfather, in his youth...nearly fifty years ago, now. Their battle spanned several years, and its said that each time they met...Naraku stole the form of a different mortal. In their final confrontation, its said that Naraku appeared as a beautiful courtesan. My grandfather possessed incredible spiritual powers, but he was also..well..”
“ A lech, right?” Koki raised an eyebrow.
“ How did you...anyway, Naraku pierced my grandfather’s hand-straight through his sealing scroll-and escaped him forever. He told my grandfather that the hellhole will eventually swallow him, his children, and his children’s children. So as long as he’s alive this curse shall pass down until your line has vanished from the earth. This tunnel widens every year, and the winds..well, they do get stronger. If I cannot defeat Naraku, then in a few years, I too shall be devoured.” Miroku says.
“ It will kill you?” Koki asks.
“ Hmmph!” was all InuKame said.
“ Yes. That in its self frightens me little...its a fate to which I have long been resigned. But to die leaving Naraku loose in the world, especially since the Jewel that was thought to have been destroyed fifty years ago has now reappeared. Its pieces scattered every where. Naraku will surely try to gather them to obtain even greater demonic power. You see..fifty years ago, its told that Naraku nearly came to possess the jewel. It slew the priest who was guarding it, and...” Miroku is cut off by InuKame.
“ You said...it killed a priest?!” Miroku nods yes. InuKame is really angry now.
‘ The bastard who took my form and killed Ren..fifty years ago..it had to be Naraku!’ InuKame thinks before talking to Miroku, “ Listen monk! You said this demon takes different forms..what about now? What shape does it have right now?” InuKame needs to know...its important.
“ Don’t you think if I knew...I’d have hunted it down and destroyed it long ago?” Miroku asks.
‘ Snaring me and Ren with its lies...fanning hatred and distrust between us, forcing us to fight. Its still alive...still hunting the jewel?! I’ll find it...and kill it...for you, Ren!’ InuKame promises, while Koki just watches him.
