Summary: Bem is lonely, Koki is lonely and both are looking for a change in their lives.
A/N: This was written for redina who wanted a Koki/Bem fic. She got tired of seeing all these Bem/other pairing fics and none geared towards her personal preference which is Koki/anyone.
It was a warm spring morning when Tanaka Koki was just getting done from his over night job, with a delivery service. He was a dock worker and spent his nights loading the different trucks that are used specifically for over night or over the road shipments. It was tiring, overly exhausting hard work and some of those packages weren’t light by any means. More than once he’s thought about quitting, especially since he wasn’t the most respected or well liked around his job. He was always getting the trucks with the heaviest and largest amount of boxes in total. compared to what the other loaders got, his job didn’t pay all that well but it paid his rent and other bills.
He was walking away from the loading docks when he found that he was staring down the barrel of a gun, the perp demanded money. Fortunately, or rather most unfortunately, Koki didn’t have any on him. He would’ve if it was pay day, but seeing as that was the day before, he knew he was in trouble. Koki hands over his wallet, the thief rifles through it and only to find that its empty, the crook raises his gun and pulls the trigger...only to be knocked to the ground, the bullet grazing Koki’s shoulder as it flies past, missing his head by mere inches.
“ What the...?” Koki says, but his voice disappears when he sees a mysterious guy standing in front of him.
“ Why are you doing this?” The mysterious stranger asks.
“ Because of money. Money is the only friend a person needs in life and the more I have...” the crook says, only to anger the mysterious man.
“ You rob and kill all for the sake of greed! That’s not how humans are supposed to treat each other, a little hard work never...argh...hurt anyone!” The man says, and changes into a monster right before Koki’s very eyes and attacks the robber as he tries to get away.
The man/creature grabs the perp by the throat and starts squeezing, Koki gets to his feet...holding his arm. He’s not sure why but something inside compels him to shout, “ You’re killing him!”
The thing drops the guy on the ground and turns to look at Koki. Looking into its eyes, Koki sees...pain, sorrow and longing. It slowly changes back into its human form and sees the strangest look in Koki’s eyes, there was no fear there.
“ Are you alright?” the man asks Koki.
“ Yes, its just a flesh wound.” Koki replies back just as sirens are heard in the night, getting closer.
Koki turns to look in the direction of the noise but when he turns back, his mysterious savior has vanished into the night. “ Where did he go” Koki says quietly just as the police come rushing over.
“ Are you alright sir? Your arm is bleeding.” one of them asks.
“ Huh? Yeah, I’m alright. I must’ve got cut trying to get away, that guy over there tried to rob me but I ran.” Koki says, lying to protect the guy that saved his life. He’s not sure why but the lonely, painfilled gaze in that man’s eyes, tugged at Koki’s heart and made him want to protect and take care of him at all costs.
After getting Koki’s statement the cops let him get on his bike and head home. He walks in the door of his apartment and starts breakfast. After breakfast, he showers and goes to bed, glad to be home and away from those ass holes he works with, Koki falls asleep thinking about the man who saved him earlier that morning.
Its around 1pm when he finally wakes up and after brushing his teeth, he puts on some fresh clothes and decides to go for a walk and to the bank as well. He comes from the bank and decides to go and walk by the harbor, for no other reason other than that’s where he lost someone close to him and the place brings him a sense of peace. He’s sitting on one of the old ships, just watching the seagulls fly by, when a sudden movement in his peripheral vision catches his attention.
“ Oh...its you. You’re the guy that helped me out early this morning, I’m Tanaka Koki. Just call me Koki, I was going to thank you but you disappeared so fast...I didn’t get the chance.
The guy nods and says his name is Bem. “ Do you sit here often?” Bem asks, as he feels his whole body awaken with a feeling he can’t describe.
“ I’m sorry, does it bother you?” Koki asks, noticing the same melancholy look in the other’s eyes. He suddenly feels a sudden desire to take care of this guy.
Bem doesn’t know what to say, really. He contemplates walking away and finding a new place to live, but his feet won’t move...even though his brain urges them too. Ignoring Bem’s silence, Koki continues talking.
“ Not really, only when I need to think things over. But I’ll leave first, good day Bem.” Koki gets up and walks away.
Bem goes down inside the ship and eats the grasses and weeds he picked. After his lunch he goes for a walk around the city, trying to figure out why his heart flips and his body tingled when that guy looked at him.
Koki continues on his own journey through the city....the hunt for a new job. He had always dreamed of owning his own pet store, he just loves animals of all kinds and he has a soft spot the ones he sees on the streets and in shelters. He just wishes the opportunity would arise so he could leave the loading job he hates so much, even his friends wonder why he still works there and puts up with the shitty treatment he receives. Work conditions aside, it did allow him to save money up for his dream..so at the time he had no reason to complain. Plus his bosses treat him better than the rest of the guys that work with him, he gets longer breaks than the others and less trucks to load as well. He even got paid leave when he hurt his shoulder really bad.
But his time at that job has now come full circle and he needs to leave and do something else, or he’ll go crazy. It was just after he got done eating lunch, when he was walking down the street he passed a ‘ FOR SALE’ sign on one of the businesses. He stops and thinks what a waste it is that the owner is selling the business, when he notices that its the pet shop that he frequents quite often and he knows the owner and knows that owner has a couple of other stores as well. He jots down the number on the sign and heads home to take his dogs for a walk.
As he’s walking through the park with his little dog Rai-chan, he hears someone scream and at the same time he’s knocked to the ground. Cursing he gets up and sees someone running, and hears a woman scream that someone had stolen her purse. Angry, Koki gets up and runs after the guy. When he finally catches up with him, he stops short seeing Bem talking to the guy...steadily getting angrier and angrier. Koki’s no fool, he’s seen this guy change once before...when he saved Koki from the guy that tried to shoot him. He walks up and places his hand lightly on Bem’s shoulder.
“ Try to calm down, Bem....there are little children watching.” Koki whispers.
Bem nods slightly, remembering the night he first encountered the man standing next to him.
“ You can either give us back the lady’s purse and whatever you may have taken out of it, or my friend here can kick your ass.” Koki gives the guy an ultimatum before Bem’s temper gets the better of him, “ Believe me, he’s not a happy person.”
The purse snatcher sees the anger in Bem’s eyes and does the wise thing and hands the stuff over. Koki calls the cops and have the cops come and pick the guy up. After he’s gone, Bem bids farewell to Koki and heads in the opposite direction. Suddenly, Koki gets an idea...he picks his dog up and runs to catch up to the guy.
“ Bem! Wait up!” Koki shouts, causing Bem to stop.
“ Want to join me for lunch back my place?” Koki asks, catching the guy off guard again.
“ Okay.” Bem smiles slightly and agrees to Koki’s offer. He’s been lonely ever since his two companions parted ways with him and he’s not heard from them in a few years now.
“ Great, let’s go. Oh this is my kid...Rai-chan, he’s a sweet dog and doesn’t really bark much.” Koki smiles as Bem scratches the little dog behind the ears, ‘ Either his dog is just stupid or he knows what I really am...but doesn’t find me a threat.’ Bem thinks as the dog licks his hand making him giggle a little.
They continue walking and Bem asks, “ So he doesn’t bark at all?” He still wonders why this guy isn’t afraid of him, even though he changed into his other form right there in front of him. Though it does help explain why Koki intervened earlier when he confronted the purse snatcher.
“ He does. Mainly if he thinks I’m in danger and he wants to protect me.” Koki explains, “ Which is why he doesn’t bark at you, he likes you.”
“ He is rather calming to be around.” Bem agrees as they make back to Koki’s apartment.
They head up and after walking in the door Bem goes to remove his boots. But Koki just waves it off saying that he doesn’t really mind if he wants to leave them on, Bem removes his shoes anyway. Being around humans for as long as he has, has taught him to be polite regardless.

I really look forward the chapter 2 ! lol
