Koki Tanaka was a normal 22yr. old guy living in Tokyo. He went to work every morning, he hung out with his friends and he even had his own place to live finally, after saving enough money to move out of his best friend’s place. But even though Koki was content with his job and social life, he would still stare at the stars and wonder if he’s even doing the right things in his life. He was always restless, wandering around the city late at night when he didn’t have to work the next day...or sometimes he did it regardless even if he did have work the next day. He never could settle down, he always felt like he where ever he was...he was always in the wrong place. Almost like he didn’t know where his true home lay, his heart was just as restless as his spirit was. No matter who he was with romantically, it always felt wrong somehow. It caused him to break things off a month later before the person could really get serious about him. It was his birthday when his life changed and fate decided to answer all the unasked questions, that he desperately sought answers to.
Koki was walking around the park late one night, he stopped by this well which he noticed seemed oddly out of place but surrounded by so much foliage that he was sure he was the only that could see it. He was leaning against the arch that enclosed this well, and no sooner does he pop the tab on his beer than he’s yanked by the back of his hoodie, into the well..blacking out.
“ W-where am I? How did I....whoa!” he shouts as he’s hit with some sort of slimy liquid.
“ There you are my darling, now be a good human and give me the black stone!” The thing shrieks as it runs at him. It almost bit his foot but he somehow repelled it. Though he won't realize this until way later.
Not knowing what in the world that creature was nor why it would want his necklace, he ran. He ran as fast as his legs would carry him. When he looks back, he thinks the creature has given up so he stops to catch his breath. When he goes to sit down under the shade of what’s known as the Old God Tree, when he sees someone, who appears to be asleep, but is actually pinned to the tree by an arrow.
“ Are those...dog’s ears?” he wonders. Out of curiosity he lightly touches one causing it twitch under his fingers. “ Wow..so soft.” he whispers softly.
“ What the hell do you think you’re doing?” an angry voice shouts.
Koki was about to answers when he’s forced against the tree and the body still pinned to it.
“ Give it up deary...and I’ll make your death as swift as possible.” the creature came back, and here he thought he got rid of the damn thing.
“ Give what up? I have no idea what you’re talking....” Koki starts but is cut off.
“ Well, well...if it isn’t Mistress Serpentina. Didn't I kill you?” the stranger says as Koki grunts in pain, they’re being squeezed tighter and tighter.
“ If it isn’t Inu-Kame, the half dog demon who seeks the Sacred Wishing Jewel. You did, child. But as you see, I’m alive and well again and once I get the black jewel...I will kill you.” she hissed.
The only thing Koki can think of is that he doesn’t want to die. Unconsciously, his grip on the strangers clothes tighten and that’s when stranger sees the black jewel around his neck.
“ Hey you...this arrow, can you pull it out?” he asks as the inhabitants from the nearby village come running over. “ If you don’t want to die with me then release me from this tree, if you’re capable.
Koki reaches up and wraps his fingers around the arrow and goes to pull it out. When they hear an old man shout.
“ No..don’t! Don’t touch the arrow!” he takes his hand from the arrow.
“ Hey! Listen to me you stupid idiot...if you want to die that’s fine by me. But I’ll tell you one thing, it won’t be from old age.” he says as Koki lifts his eyes from the old man to the stranger, he’s not sure why but he feels sympathy for the guy.
-No...I don’t want to die..not here!- Koki thinks to himself.
“ Live again, Inu-Kame!” He shouts pulling the arrow from the half demon’s chest.
“ DIE DEMON!!!” Inu-Kame shouts once freed from the tree, using his claws to kill the snake demon pushing Koki out of the way.
Koki hits the ground hard causing the Jewel fly off his neck and land in the bushes somewhere. He freaks and frantically searches for the jewel that was left to him by his brother, only to find it hidden in the bushes.
“ He killed it....with his bare hands..” the villagers remark in surprise.
“ Do you think I’m just some trained dog, human? Now give me the jewel or feel my claws.” he says and charges at Koki.
“ High Priest Takahashi, he’s free. Now what are we going to do?” one of the villagers asks.
“ I’m forever plagued by fools.” he says to himself, pulling out a beaded necklace.
“ Damn! He’s fast!” Koki mutters dodging another swipe from the half breed’s claws.
“ Why you..come..huh?” he stops his attack noticing the charmed beads that appeared on his neck.
“ Quick! Say a subduing spell!” the old man shouts just as Koki trips and falls.
“ Do you really think you can subdue me?” the other laughs.
“ Like what?” Koki asks, dodging another attack.
“ Anything!”
“ SIT!!” Koki shouts and watches in surprise as Inu-Kame just falls to the ground.
“ What the hell?!” Inu-Kame says, trying to lift the beads from his neck.
“ Not even with your power can you lift that from around your neck, so just don’t try.”
“ Grrr....why you meddlesome old goat!” he lunges for Koki and Master Takahashi.
“ Would you mind?” the High Priest asks politely.
“ Sit boy.” Koki said and again Inu-Kame just falls to the ground.
‘This is fun’ Koki thinks to himself despite the sympathy he felt for the guy earlier, he still tried to kill him after all.
“ Okay you guys can go back to the village, shows over.”
The villagers leave to go and rebuild what was destroyed, while Koki, Inu-Kame and the Priest head back to his house. The Priest tells Koki that he can go and take a bath in the river out back, to get the demon blood and stink off his body.
“ Man...this water is freakin cold.” After adjusting to the water, he swims around for a bit, “ So, that stone is called the Sacred Wishing Jewel.” he climbs out sees Inu-Kame watching from the cliff above.
“ SIT!!” Koki shouts. First he tries to kill him and now he’s spying on him. Koki’s not ashamed of his body, its nicely toned...its just that’s an invasion of his privacy. While he’s waiting for his original clothes to dry, he changes into clothes the Priest lent him.
“ See anything you like?” the Master Takahisha asks.
“ Hmmph!”
“ First you try to kill me and now you’re spying on me...pervert.” Koki says walking back to where the old man was sitting.
“ I wasn’t spying..I was...”
“ Looking for a way to steal the Jewel right?” the Priest finishes his sentence for him.
“ What are you? A mind reader?”
“ No, you’re just predictable.” the old man dead pans.
“ So, why is this thing so important anyway?” Koki was curious now, especially after almost being killed twice over it.
“ That jewel you where, Koki, left this world fifty years ago with the death of my brother. It has the power to make half-demons, such as Inu-Kame here, into a full demon and enhance their powers. With full demons it makes them invincible and...do you believe in reincarnation?”
“ No, why?” Koki asks while the half breed just listens.
“ Tell me, have you ever seen stuff others couldn't or been able to defend yourself without ever touching another being?”
Koki thinks back to the last fight that he had been in and he broke the guy’s arm without ever touching him, when the guy tried to rob him. “ Now that you mention it...yeah. That snake demon and Inu-Kame aren’t the first to try and take this jewel from me. I somehow manage to break the thief’s arm and my hand barely touched him.”
“ Then there’s no doubt, Koki, you are the reincarnation of my brother Ren. Who, coincidentally, was the very man that....”
“ That bastard killed me and bound me to that wretched tree.” Inu-Kame grumbled. “ Whatever happened to that jerk, not that I actually give a damn.”
“ He died the same day he put that spell on you, and the Wishing Jewel was burned with his body. Only to reappear over thousands years later in Koki’s world, tell me Koki..where did you get that from?”
“ My brother gave it to me on my birthday last year right before he killed himself, I’m not sure where he got it.” Koki said stifling a yawn.
Seeing how tired Koki was, the priest put their talk on hold until the morning. Laying on the palate that was made out for him, he goes over everything that happened to him today. He’s not sure why he’s supposed to be here and all he wants to do is just go back to his world, his job and his friends. He rolls over and falls asleep wondering why he’s here and how can he get back home, suddenly he feels a hand on his neck. Having a good idea as to who that hand belongs to..
“ Sit.” he just yawns and goes back to sleep.
“ Damn! I forgot about the stupid prayer beads.” Inu-Kame curses as he hits the floor.
While Inu-Kame’s thinking about his next move, he sees a shadow pass by the window. It was a small black crow with red eyes. He goes outside and sees them fly off in a eastern direction.
“ Crow Demon? What are they doing here? Whatever it is, it can’t be good.” he mutters before going back inside where he just watches the sleeping guy next to him.
The Next Day:
“ The old well. That’s where I came out from, if it can bring me here..then maybe..just maybe it can take me back.” Koki thinks to himself as he’s walking through Inu-Kame’s Forest, when he’s suddenly knocked out behind.
He wakes up...wet. Someone threw water on him to bring him around, he looks around and finds that he’s surrounded by at least half a dozen men with one very large, dumb looking man at the center. He figures the big guy must be their leader, at least that’s what history has taught him anyway.
“ The Jewel. Give me the Sacred Jewel.”
Koki just glares and refuses to give up the Jewel.
Meanwhile the Priest and Inu-Kame are searching for him. They searched whole village until someone said that they saw the young master heading towards Inu-Kame’s Forest, and that’s exactly where Inu-Kame ran off to.
“ Why in the hell would you wander off with Jewel on you, idiot.” he thinks.
“ I said give me the jewel!” the big guy says, picking Koki up and slamming his him on the ground.
The thug releases him, holding up the Sacred Jewel as he does so. Having gotten what he was after he orders his men to hold Koki down so he can slice his head from shoulders. Muttering what a waste killing the stranger would be considering how much ‘fun’ they could have with him, they lock Koki’s arms behind his back and held him there. Koki closes his eyes as the blade comes down, hearing the gasps from the guy next to him, he opens his eyes and sees that big one had hit his own guy instead.
Koki grabs the only one holding him and throws him in the other guy's way. He runs to get away and trips over something on the floor. He looks and sees a long spear that someone had left in the middle of the room.
“ Don’t come any closer!” Koki shouts holding the spear out in front of him.
His attacker swings and with sheer brute force, cuts the spear in two. Surprised, Koki ducks and runs for his life, only to be stopped by more of the guy’s henchmen. They bar the exit, not allowing him to leave. Instead they shove him back towards the middle of the room, his kidnaper swings only to be blocked by...
“In-Inu-Kame?” Koki couldn’t believe it. He knows the half demon hates him for some reason and that he’s only after the Jewel, but still he could’ve let that big lug kill him making it easier for him to get the Jewel.
“ There you are, I thought I smelled the stench of rotting flesh. Now come out crow demon!” he shouts, causing the bird to show its self.
“ Too weak to get the thing yourself so you employ this useless mass, huh? Be gone foul creature!”
He swipes at the corpse and the bird shoots out from its back and flies off with jewel in its belly. Cursing the bird he looks down at Koki, forcing the human to his feet.
“ Don’t think for one minute I came here to save your ass, I came for the jewel.” he looks around and spots a bow and a quiver full of arrows on the floor by the center beam holding up the roof.
With bow and arrows in Koki’s hand, he tells him to climb on his back. Koki does so and is surprised that he can carry him so easily. They take off after the demon with Inu-Kame telling Koki what will happen should that bird absorb the jewel.
Never using a bow a day in his life, Koki pulls out an arrow, loads the bow and sets his sights on the bird.
“ Fly steady!”
“ I am! Remember Ren was a master bowman.” he taunts.
“ I’m not Ren! I’m Koki!” he reminds Inu-kame. But asks for the guy’s help anyway.
He lets his arrow fly, just clipping its target, taking off its foot as it started to transformation. Much to Koki’s horror it picks up a small child and takes off with her.
“ Don’t tell me its going to...” he starts but Inu-Kame cuts him off.
“ I told you before that thing eats people from the inside out.” he says. “ Gotcha! Can you see the jewel?”
“ Yeah, its in the bird’s wing,” Koki says as the half demon aims for the right side of the bird. “ What are you doing? Save the little girl first!” Seeing that he’s being ignored, he jumps from Inu-Kame’s back and grabs the child, falling to the ground.
“ You’re alright now, little one.” he coos, comforting the child as its mother comes running over.
Figuring that bird is going to regenerate and absorb the jewel completely, he ties the bird’s foot to his hankerchief. More determined than ever, he reloads his bow and fires another one.
“ Are you kidding me?! How do you expect to...” Inu-Kame shouts but stops when the arrow hits the bird.
All of a sudden there’s a bright flash as the bird is struck, unknowingly Koki’s enchanted arrow shattered the jewel. Filled with a sense of foreboding that chills him to his core, they take off in the direction of light. They get to the spot where the bird died and both start frantically searching for the black stone.
Seeing a small glowing light coming from the debris, Koki kneels down picking up the glowing object.
“ Is that...?”
“ I guess so.” Koki answers before Inu-Kame can get his question out.
Shard in hand, they head back to the old priest’s place.
