Summary: Is there a way for one broken and defeated detective to navigate the road to redemption alone...or does he need help?
Koki’s one week time span to find and save Kame was almost up, and yet he was no closer to figuring out where the guy is being held captive at. Its been six days and still nothing, no visits from Maru on how Kame’s doing, no taunting calls or letters from Kame’s tormentor, no...nothing. All Koki has to go on is that stupid tape the killer sent and that strange background noise, and his nightmares. Waking up from his same repeating nightmare of Kame strapped to that accursed chair with blood dripping from his chest, looking at him through clouded, yet begging eyes, repeating the words “tape” “noise” “door” “picture” before leaning his head back allowing the blade to do its job.
“Damn!! That nightmare...again.” he mumbles running one hand through his hair, while wiping his eyes with the other. Koki didn’t understand why he always had tears in his eyes after waking from such a horrible nightmare.
Finding that he doesn’t have the ability to stomach food after he has that dream, he gets up, stretches and makes his morning coffee. While he waits for his coffee, he goes to take a shower. He comes out five minutes later dressed and ready to go and after his coffee he heads to the station to analyze the tape further and see if he can figure out what Kame means by the word “door”.
“Hey Tanaka-san, any luck on trying to figure out why he keeps repeating the “door”?” the chief asks sitting down next to koki, after he told his boss about the nightmare he’s been having every night for the last six days.
“ No..not yet and I.....wait a minute!” Koki practically shouts. “ Stop! Go back to where the camera is just about to focus on the door...stop right there! That poster!”
“ What about it?” the technician asks.
“ All it says is “ Danger! Keep Out!” What’s the significance?”
“ I don’t know...yet. But I have seen that somewhere before...but where?” Koki falls silently trying to think.
“ Hey Chief..this just came from the killer.” Massu says and hands an envelope to his boss.
Dumping the contents on the desk, he’s even more confused then ever. Its a set of three numbers to three different warehouses near the Yokohama pier.
“Why would he send us these?” he asks before calling Koki over just as Akira walks up.
“ Do these make any sense to you, Koki? The killer just sent them to us a few minutes ago.”
Koki takes a look at the numbers briefly before telling them that they correspond to three different warehouse units near the Yokohama pier. Koki knows in his gut that Kame is somewhere near that area but where, he’s not sure.
“ Maybe the killer is telling us where Kamenashi-san might be?” Massu says.
“ Maybe? Akira, you and Massu head over to these warehouses and see what’s up. While Tanaka-san and I finish going over this tape.”
Nodding Akira and Massu take a team over down to the pier. Its only when they leave that the killer calls the station and tells them that Kame’s fate will be sealed in less than seven hours from now, and its only ten in the morning.
“ You bastard! You said I had a week!” Koki growls into the speaker.
“ True, but I decided to end the poor guy’s suffering. I’ll give you until five this evening to save him.” he says.
Before Koki or the chief could respond the line goes dead, but not before they both hear something that catches their attention...making their ears perk up. There it was..again! The noise from the tape. But they still don’t know what was since it sounded like the killer had placed something over the phone to try and cancel out all background noises, not succeeding all that well.
Four hours go by and still Koki can’t figure out until his gaze falls on the numbers that were still sitting on the table in front of him, and his dream comes back to him like a flood. He pulls Kame’s picture from his pocket and its only when his vision settles on the water behind Kame and the child does he put two and two together. Now he knows where he’s heard that sound before, its ocean! Now it all starts falling into place..the noise, the numbers, and his dream..in his dream Kame referenced the very photo Koki’s taken to carrying with him and he was hinting at this location.
“ I know where he’s holding Kamenashi!” Koki exclaims.
“ Well lets go then!”
Koki and the chief head off to the warehouse district five miles from Akira’s current location. They pull up just as Akira is walking back to his car to radio their boss saying that they still haven’t found any signs of Koki’s missing partner. Realizing that Akira is in the wrong location, he gets out and runs to the right heading towards the ocean.
“ Tanaka! Where are...” Akira starts but stops when he sees the chief take off in the same direction that Koki went.
After twenty minutes of running, they come to halt in front of a slightly broken down building that looks as if its still being repaired.
“ And you’re sure he’s in there, Koki?”
“ Positive, boss.”
“ But how...?” Then he sees the numbers above the door Koki was standing in front of. “ So it wasn’t referring to three separate buildings, it was a reference to one building.”
“ Exactly, now if you’ll excuse me...he’s waiting for me.” Koki heads inside to find Kame and confront the person that has caused him nothing but pain and suffering for the past year. While their boss radios for Akira and his men to get over here, telling them that they were in the wrong area.
Akira shows up and goes to follow Koki, convinced that he’s the only capable in rescuing Kame. But the chief grabs his arm and stops him, saying that Koki’s already inside and to let him be the one to rescue his partner.
Inside the warehouse:
All Koki sees is darkness and after allowing his eyes to adjust he sees a red light at the far end of the room under some stairs. He makes his way over and that’s when he sees the same warning sign that was on the video tape and on the doors leading inside the room he’s in now. He puts his ear to the door but hears nothing, testing the door handle he notices that its unlocked. He quietly opens said door and creeps into the room, all of a sudden a single light comes on illuminating a solitary figure in a chair in the center of the room. Koki’s not sure who that is until the stranger stirs and tries to lift his head but finds it difficult as he’s not eaten much of anything since he was taken a eight days ago.
Kame looks up and blinks the light from his vision and barely recognizing the man that’s standing only feet from him, he asks...
“K-Koki....is that..you?” his voice was whisper soft and weak from everything he’s been through, as the guy runs over.
“ Yes, Kazuya...its me. Hang on and I’ll get you out of here.” Koki starts working on the straps that have Kame bound to his chair, all the while keeping one eye on the lethal looking blade above their heads and his ears open for any sounds of the killer.
“ I-I knew you would find me. My trust in you wasn’t misplaced li-like everyone thought.” he whispers as Koki works on the very last strap that binds his right leg.
Koki almost has him free, but finds that the buckle was glued down so it couldn’t be opened. As he struggling with the buckle they hear a voice coming from his right, Koki looks over and sees the person who has tormented him for the last year and now is trying to take away the only person who believes in him.
“ Well, well....Pride, you made just in time. Lust had an hour left to live, but now since I have the both of you here...I can’t allow you two to walk out away.” The killer holds a knife under the rope that is keeping the blade from coming down on their heads and slowly starts cutting so the rope breaks a little at a time.
“ H-hurry..” Kame pleads.
Realizing that he has no choice but to use the knife that he keeps in his boot, he pulls it slowly so as not to attract the killer’s gaze to his left side. He manages to extract the blade and starts sawing at the worn leather strap. No sooner does Koki manage to cut Kame free the killer then realizes what was happening.
“ I don’t think so...” he laughs and with one final swipe he lets loose the blade at the same time as Koki pulls Kame from his chair, landing on his back with Kame’s bloody body on top of him.
Infuriated at the fact that he just barely missed them, he pulls out a gun.
“ Nice job Pride, you manage to save him from having his head sliced off. But since he’s in too much pain for you to just force him off of you, I will now finish this.”
No sooner does he point the gun at Koki’s head, does a shot ring out and Kame’s tormentor falls to the ground holding his leg. He tries to stand but falls back to the ground as another shot rings out into the silence. Koki looks down and sees Kame holding Koki’s gun out and the look in Kame’s eyes shows what’s going through his head. With the last bit of strength Kame had left in him, he used to immobilize the guy they were after for months now, he wasn’t going to let some deranged lunatic kill someone that’s important to him...not again.
Noticing that killer can’t move from being shot twice, once in each knee cap, he finally passes out with a grim but satisfied smile on his face. Feeling Kame go still and his breathing become shallow, Koki gently stands Kame on his feet and drags him out of the nightmarish room that was his prison, into the room beyond and out into the night air. He lays Kame down just as Akira and the chief run over, he tells Akira that the killer is still inside unable to move but advises him to hurry just in case the psycho has one last trick up his sleeve. Their boss, meanwhile, calls for an ambulance to take Kame to the hospital. When it finally shows up, Kame’s loaded up and is taken away to get the medical treatment he so desperately needs.
With Kame gone, Koki fills his boss in on what happened inside and how he finally figured out where Kame was. Akira and Massu come out a few minutes later with their suspect just as another ambulance shows up to take him to the infirmary at the state prison where he can be watched and won’t get out of while he’s awaiting trial. Back at the station the chief tells the entire prescient that it was Natsume Kojihiro aka “The Immortality Seeker”, was the one that was responsible for the death of Yuichi Nakamaru. Not wanting to believe it Akira demands to know how they can be for sure. As an answer the Chief just pops the tape in that Akira demanded to see four days prior and fast forwards to the part where the killer admits to it.
After hearing the killer’s own words Akira just goes quiet. Of course none of this Koki hears since he’s been spending his nights sitting by Kame’s hospital bed, trying to sort his feelings. He heads home for the night where he finally gets one last visit from Maru.
“ You did it Koki. Not only did you do what those around said you weren’t able to do, you are now getting back to the Koki I always knew was deep down inside. Thanks to you, he’s alive and will make a full recovery. This is the last time either you or Kame will see me, but I will hang around for a bit longer.”
“ Maru..you knew where Kame was this whole time, didn’t you?” Maru just nods. “ Why didn’t you tell me?” Koki asks.
“ I wasn’t allowed to and this was something you had to do on your own. Hearing the killer admit to my death, do you still believe that it was your fault?”
Smiling Koki says, “ No, I don’t. Saving Kame helped to realize that I couldn’t save you back then and that I won’t be able to save everyone.”
“ Move on with your life, Koki, and be happy.” he says and disappears, never showing himself to Koki again.
After dinner Koki climbs into bed and places Kame’s picture on the small table and drifts off to sleep, and finds that he’s no longer plagued by nightmares of not only Kame being killed, but of Maru being gunned down right before his eyes.
Its been a month since Koki saved Kame from being their killer’s next victim, while Kame is still on leave recovering mentally from what he’s been through. In that time he waits to hear back from the chief about his request for a transfer to the Chiba prefecture, the only thing holding his request up is Koki. He needs Koki to sign off on it since he was Kame’s partner since he started there eight months ago. He’s about to call the chief to see if Koki had signed the paper yet wheh he hears a knock on his door, wondering who it could be he sets his phone down and opens his front door, shocked he sees Koki standing there.
“ Oh..hey. What brings you here?” He asks as he stands aside to let Koki in.
“ You...you were right. Maru’s death wasn’t my fault, the person who tortured you...killed him. I am sorry Kazuya, I should not have just brushed your theory off like I did...if I would’ve just listened when you tried to tell me how the victims were connected then we could’ve stopped him sooner.” Koki says.
“ Its okay, Tanaka-san.” Kame smiles and Koki finds that his heart gets pleasantly warm when Kame smiles at him like that.
Kame turns around to pick up the book he was reading when he feels a pair of strong arms wrap around his waist and gently pulls him back. Placing his hands on the arms that now hold him he says,
“ Koki...”
“ Please....don’t go. I’m no longer afraid Kazu, you and Maru were right...I have fallen for you and I was just denying my own feelings. Out of fear and anger at what happened a year ago...I didn’t want to admit to what was staring me in the face the whole time. Its the very reason why I can’t control myself around you even when I’m sober, when I saw your wounds and dried blood on floor and when that lunatic cut that blade free..I knew then that I couldn’t live without you, Kame. So, please...don’t leave. Stay here in Tokyo with me..because I-I love you Kazuya. Its okay if you don’t believe me I understand but I just had to tell you.” he admits quietly, while he buries his face in Kame’s chocolate brown hair.
