Summary: Is there a way for one broken and defeated detective to navigate the road to redemption alone...or does he need help?
“ I heard we got another a letter from the killer, can I see it?” Koki asks as he sits down in the Chief’s office.
“ Its not so much a letter as its a video tape message for you..here.” he presses play and no sooner does Kame’s face show up on the screen, does Koki tense up.
“ He’s waiting for you “Pride”. Is his trust misplaced? He’s been marked, all I need to do is cut this rope here,” the killer pans the camera so it hits on taught rope ten meters to Kame’s right. “ and the blade above his head will come down and slice his pretty head from his shoulders. See the blood...” he aims the camera at Kame’s feet. “ its his sin dripping from his body. He’s alive...for now, you have a week to do for him what I made sure you failed at doing a year ago. Yes, it was I who was responsible for the death your last partner. You see, Pride, this ritual is two years in the making. I used Yuichi Nakamaru as a test victim and he was in my way, that day my aim was you since your crime would help me achieve my goal a lot sooner. But Yuichi got in my way when he saved you from being gunned down.”
“ Now, Detective..is there anything you want to say?” the killer grabs Kame’s head and lifts it up.
“ T-Tanaka-san...” Kame whispers.
“ His first name, use his first name! I know you two are closer than that.” he says getting excited and angry at the same time.
Kame, being stubborn and wanting to keep certain things from causing Koki any trouble with Akira and his men just repeats his last name before passing out again.
“Tsk, tsk...he’s protecting you, Tanaka-san, the guy who you don’t want to have anything to do with and loath for the most part...is protecting you. Now why would he be doing that, I wonder? Hmm..I know why as do you. Now can you find him within the set time period or are you going to fail again? Remember ’Pride’ whether he lives or dies, is in your hands.” the killer finishes and whips the camera around so it briefly films the door that was right behind him.
The chief turns off the tape and turns his attention back to Koki who is the only other person to see that tape.
“ So he was the one who was behind Yuichi’s death. But why would he refer to you as ‘Pride’?”
“ I don’t....maybe because I have been told more than once that my pride rivals that of the devil’s. Who else has seen this tape?” Koki says.
“ So far just me and you. But you see, Koki, you weren’t responsible for his death.”
“ Can I borrow that for a while?” Koki asks, nodding his boss hands him the tape.“ If you need me, I’ll be at home.”
“ Okay, in the mean time I’ll have Akira question the people that live in Kamenashi’s building. But what’s up? You act like you know something.” the chief asks just as Akira and Tokito walk through his door.
“ Its more like I understand something.”
“Which is what?”
“ The letter.” was all Koki as he walked out the door.
No sooner does Koki walk through the door he hears his phone go off, its...the killer.
“ There’s someone who wants to talk to you.” he holds the phone up Kame’s hear.
“ Tanaka-san...ahhhh!!” Kame says but screams when the killer starts on the 'T’.
“ Kamenashi!!” Koki yells.
“ He’s bent on protecting you for whatever reason, detective. Why is that? Remember...you have a week.” the killer hangs up and puts Kame’s phone back in his pocket and continues his work.
“Kazuya!!” Koki shouts just as the line goes dead. “ Damn! He hung up.” Koki pops the tape in his vcr and see if he can get any clues from the minimum view of the room Kame was in.
Koki sits on his couch for the next couple of hours replaying the tape the killer sent, frustrated that he hasn’t found anything useful he goes to turn it off, when all of a sudden he hears something in the back ground he hasn’t heard before. But what the sound is he’s not sure and the more he replays that section of the tape, the more it frustrates him that he can’t pin point the source of the noise though he’s sure he has heard it before.
Koki gets up from his couch and looks out his living room window, wondering if he can really save Kame or not. Everyone is expecting him too which doesn’t help him any. Sighing, he turns around and gets a shock he doesn’t really need right now.
“ What the....! Maru! You scared the shit out of me! Just because you’re dead doesn’t mean you have to go around startling me like that!” Koki says, once his heart comes down from his throat.
“Sorry Koki.” he chuckles, “ I wasn’t trying too. But now do you understand that you weren’t responsible for my death? Even if you had taken those bullets that had your name on them, I still would’ve died that day. Please stop beating yourself up over what happened, Koki, its too painful to watch. Open you heart back up and just admit to what both Kame and I know you feel, you won’t heal other wise.”
“But I don’t....” Maru cuts Koki off...
“ Then ask yourself why you’re carrying that picture every where you go and why you look at it every night when you’re laying in bed, not to mention why you still won’t read the letter he wrote to you? Now, I have to go...he’s expecting me to come back.”
“ Wait...who’s..?”
“ Kazuya. Read the letter and hurry up...he’s running out of time.” Before Koki could ask where Kame was being held at, though he doubts Maru would’ve told him anyway, he was gone.
He pops the tape out of the VCR and puts in the cabinet by his bed. As he’s walking into the kitchen he pulls out the photo of Kame and the little girl, lightly running his fingers over his face, Koki whispers Kame’s name.
“ Is what Maru telling me true, Kazuya? Have I...no, did I fall for you and now I am denying it?” he says quietly. “ I’m sorry Kame, but I doubt I will find you before its too late. But I will try, I promise.” he puts the picture back in his pocket just as someone knocks on his door.
“ What do you want, Akira?” Koki rolls his eyes.
“ Where is it?”
“ Akira..the chief said to....”
“ Quiet Massu.”
“ Where is...what?” Koki asks again.
“ The tape I saw you walk out with this morning, I know you have it.”
“ Aren’t you supposed to be questioning the people that live in Kamenashi-san’s building?” Koki was sure the chief told Akira to leave him alone and that him bugging Koki isn’t going to help them find Kame.
“ We did and they didn’t see or hear anything out of the ordinary. But that’s beside the point, Tanaka. You’re holding onto something that could break our case wide open...now hand it over!”
“ First of all, its mine and Kamenashi’s case. Second, its now become my case as he’s currently being held by our killer and third, if the chief gives me something to look over that doesn’t mean I have to allow you to look at it. Why are you so intent on taking this case over or at the very least trying to work on it with me? You never gave a damn before and now you do, what’s up with that?” Koki goes to shut his door, not really expecting an answer.
Akira blocks Koki from shutting the door when he says, “ Because I can do for him what you aren’t capable of doing. We all know Yuichi’s death is your fault and I won’t allow Kamenashi-san to suffer the same fate, that and I want to know what you two are hiding. You both have been acting strange ever since he showed up.”
“ Why is our private lifes so damn important?” With that Koki slams his door and locks it.
After his confrontation with Akira, Koki makes dinner and watches the tape again. Though he’s not really sure what good it will do since he still can’t pin point the noise he keeps hearing.
Across the city Maru visits a bloody and weakened Kame. As much as Kame loves Koki and as much as he trusts in his partner to save him, even he’s realistic about his current predicament and that maybe, just maybe, Koki won’t be able too. He tries not to think about that but its hard and it makes his heart ache for Koki all the more.
“ Kazu..don’t give up on him. I know its bleak right now, but he’s doing his best to find you. Even he’s not sure if he will succeed or not, but if I know Koki...he will find you. Even if you’re not alive when he does, I’m doing my best to get through to him. After I left he took out the picture of you that he’s taken to carrying with him and he got depressed for a different reason.”
“ My chest...it hurts so much. The wound I don’t care about..that will heal. I-I’m sorry, Yuichi. I couldn’t do as you asked in time.” he starts crying.
“You did enough in the amount of time you did have, while neither one of us expected the same person, that killed me, to kidnap and torture you, at least Koki now knows that my death wasn’t his fault. Just hang in there Kame, don’t give up.” Maru says then leaves.
“Koki....you’re my only hope.” Kame whispers to himself before he falls silent just as his tormentor comes in to his room to take him to the ‘carving’ chamber to carve Koki’s sin into his chest just under the his own. Kame has no strength left to fight, so he just lays there and allows his tormenter to complete his work.
Back in Tokyo:
Koki finally gets up the courage to read Kame’s letter.
Dear Koki,
That day when you found me still sitting at his grave, I was at a loss as to what he wanted me to do next to help you. I told you before he comes to me and when you walked up we just got done talking. He knew you would flip out if you saw me still sitting there, but I was hoping to talk to you that day but after you lost control like that and threw his flowers back at me, which were our boss’s but I put your name on card...not the chief’s and not mine, but your’s, I knew you would never listen to anything I had to say. Just so you know, Maru wasn’t to pleased that you did that..he wanted you to leave the lillies there and for you to put your’s next to them.
I wanted to tell you that I know what you’re going through, Koki. I know how it feels to lose someone so close to you, that you work with everyday and share a life with outside being partners on the job. That kind of bond and love is hard to let go off, but that doesn’t mean that you can’t have that again with someone else. I miss my ex-partner still, to this very day it still hurts that he’s gone, but I know Tatsuya, wanted me to move on after he was gunned down by the mafia group we were investigated two years ago. Like Tat-chan for me, Yuichi wants you to start moving on with your life and find someone to share your life with.
Just because you love someone new doesn’t mean that you have to erase the person you lost from your heart and memories, both loves can share equal space. I know this might be hard to except for you since you just lost him a year ago and while you’ll never get over the loss completely, eventually you’ll find it easier. Some people walk the road to redemption and forgiveness by themselves, but most people need the help of another person. Whatever you think I’m trying to do..I’m not. I can’t and never will be able to replace Yuichi, nor I am trying to. I won’t tell how to you feel but both Maru and I know that your feelings towards me have changed, though you deny it and I won’t lie and say that your parting words that day didn’t hurt, they did. But at the same time I also understood where they were coming from.
You noticed my feelings for you a while ago and it was the main reason why I put an end to what we were doing. While the sex was the best I ever had, it was still causing you more pain and confusion, and I couldn’t keep allowing you to go through that. Koki, you know both Maru and I love you and you know we want you to be happy again. Its like I told you the second night we slept together, I don’t ask you to love me..all I want is for you to be happy. The road you were on when we met that night at the bar wasn’t going to help you. All you were doing was putting yourself through hell over something that you couldn’t have prevented, even if you did get to chose his life over yours...Maru told me that he still would’ve died regardless.
If you want to love me that’s fine, it would be great actually. But if you don’t then that’s alright too, just please start listening to what he has to tell you Koki. Neither him nor me can keep watching you self destruct like this...its too painful. I love you Koki, and I never thought I would love another until I met you. Well, I’ll end this letter now as its become quite lengthy. If, at the end of this case, you don’t want to work with me and never want anything to do with me outside work any more, then I’ll just find another prescient to work at and never come into your life again.
Love,
Kame. <3
P.S. Maru says that very soon you will find out who was behind what happened and why, maybe then you’ll realize that everyone was wrong...including you.
Koki finished reading and didn’t realize he started crying until his tears hit the letter. Wiping them away, he folds the letter and puts away.
“ Kazuya...Maru...” he whispers as his phone goes off.
“ Hey Pride....how goes the investigation? Since I can’t have you, I just marked Kamenashi twice...once with his and again with your sin. He’s so much pain....its unreal and yet he still hangs on to the small hope you’ll come for him.”
“ Why you....” Koki starts but a quiet and weak voice cuts him off.
“ K-Koki....please...” Kame could barely talk with all the pain he’s in physically and emotionally.
“ My, my....you sure know to pick the stubborn ones, Detective. There’s not much time left..I would hurry if I were you.” the killer says and disconnects the line before Koki can so much as breath.
Enraged at what the killer’s been doing to Kame and that he was the one that caused Yuichi’s death...Koki finds that he’s more determined than ever to save Kame from being killed by the lunatic that is holding him hostage, he puts on some coffee, orders take-out and gets to work on trying to piece all the evidence together to save Kame.
