They get up to the office of Mr. Okura where they unintentionally eavesdrop on his phone conversation, hearing the phone being set down Kame knocks on the door..

“ Yes?”

“ We’re here on an investigation and we would like to ask you a few questions.” Koki says.

“ If this is about that money laundering scheme from a few years back then just get out. I told you that neither me nor this compa...” he starts getting enraged.

“ Its a murder investigation, Mr. Okura, my partner Tanaka-san and I are trying to figure out a series of strange murders that have taken place.”

“ So what does this have to do with me?” Mr. Okura asks still annoyed with the detectives.

“ One of your employees, a Mrs. Hakkita Sairyu, was the latest victim. We were wondering if she had any enemies that you knew of?”  Koki responds.

“Hmm....Not that I know of, no. But she was a woman that got around..if you know what I mean..she’s was hard worker and she was up for a promotion.” Mr. Okura states.

“ Do you know a Mr. Kawamura? She started seeing him three months before she was killed and she had this carved on her body.” Kame shows him a picture of the odd symbol.

“ No, I can’t say I do. But if anyone would know it would be her best friend, Sori Matsumoto, she works at the Ramen stand over in Shabuya. She brought us all lunch from there once since we couldn’t get out of our meeting in time, I’ll you one thing the Ramen at Haibuky is some of the best tasting Ramen you’ll ever eat...I promise you that. Now if there’s nothing else, I’m a very busy man.”

“ Have you ever seen this symbol before?” Kame asks.

“ Only when the news was reporting on the murders religiously and they showed that image from one of the old crime scenes. But other than that...nope.”

“ Well, if you can think of anything else here’s my card.” Koki says and leaves his contact info on Mr. Okura’s desk.

Walking back to the car Koki accidently bumps into a guy coming from the opposite direction. After apologizing him and Kame watch as the strange guy headed into the building next to one that they just came from.

“ Koki? What’s up?” Kame asks.

“ Its nothing Kazuya, I just thought I recognized him for a minute. Let’s go.” Koki says and motions for Kame to get in the car. Kame is about to climb into the passenger seat when something catches his attention out of the corner of his eye. Turning his head he sees that they’re being watched, its only when Koki practically pulls him into the car does he sit down.

Its only after the stranger hears the distant sounds of car doors being shut, does he poke his head around the corner and just watches at the occupants in said car pull away. He sees Kame looking directly at him just before he ducks his head to get in. Smiling to himself he sets off towards his destination.

Kame is still looking out the window, not realizing that Koki’s been trying to get his attention for the last hour. Its only when he attacks the back of Kame’s head does he get the younger man’s attention.

“ What’s up with you?” Koki asks annoyed, as he parks outside the entrance to the Haibuky Ramen shop.

“ Sorry, its just that I think we were being watched earlier and I think it was that guy we accidently bumped into, but I’m not sure.” Kame says rubbing the spot where Koki’s hand and his head met.

“We’re here. Let’s go.” Koki says getting out and heading inside.

“ Excuse us but we’re looking for a Sori Matsumoto. We were told she worked here.” Kame says.

“ Yes, I’m Sori Matsumoto. How can I help you?”

“I’m detective Takana-san and this is my partner Kamenashi-san, we’re investigating a series of murders that have take place recently and we were told that you were friends with Hakkita Sairyu.” Koki answers.

“ Yeah we have been best friends since our school days. Why? Did something happen?” she asks fearing the worst.

“ I’m sorry to have to tell you this but she was our killer’s latest victim.” Kame says and pushes her photo towards Sori.

“ Is there anything that you could tell us, like did she have any enemies?”

“ If she did sh-she never told me about it.” She said through her tears.

“ What can you tell us about her husband and her lover Mr. Kawamura?” Kame asks.

“ Well h-her husband Shota is a sweet guy, he adored Saiyru. But over time she got fed up with him always working, traveling and she told that their bed room activities even stopped. He always said it was because he was just too tired from working and going over seas for his job. He’s been in America for the past eight months, one day she came by my place and told me all about this guy she met and that they started dating.”

“ When did this happen?”

“ About three months ago and when I asked her what his name was she just beamed like a little kid and told me his name was Ren Kawamura. According to Saiyru Ren was everything her husband wasn’t and that he always found the time to give her the attention she wanted, she said that it didn’t matter what time of the day or night, or no matter how busy he was but that he always found time for her. Her husband Shota, to my knowledge, has no idea about her affair.” she answered.

“ Did she happen to say when her husband was due to come back?” Koki asks.

“ Yesterday. I think he was due back yesterday.”

“ Does this symbol look familiar to you? It was carved into her chest and inner thigh after she was killed.” Kame points to the images on the photo.

“ Other than when they showed it on the news...no I’m sorry.”

“ Well, we won’t take up any more of your time. Here’s my card in case you think of anything else.” Kame says as him and Koki get up to leave.

“ Okay.”

As they were leaving Kame saw the same guy from before, or thought he did anyway. They just got in the car when Koki gets a call from the chief telling them to get back to the station pronto. Wondering what in the world can be so damn important that the chief has interrupt his investigation, he makes a beeline for the station.

No sooner do they walk through the doors do the whispers and stares start. Getting annoyed Kame tells the room at large that if they got something to say then come right out and say it, instead of doing behind their backs. Faultering under the glare Kame’s now giving them, they all shut up and go back to what they were doing, only one person has the balls to shout “MUREDER!!” just as Koki walks into the chief’s office, where he slams the door. Hearing this Kame goes over to where Akira and his friends were standing and asks which one just said that.

“ I didn’t.” Akira said.

“ Nor did we.” two other people say.

“ I said it. I was the one that called that him a murderer.” the fourth man admits.

“ Massu, wasn’t it?” the guy nods as Kame walks over, “ correct me if I’m wrong but didn’t you just come out of the academy?”

“ Yes, and from what I have already heard about your partner there...its true. I wouldn’t trust him with my dog, much less my life.” Massu snorts.

“ Shut up Massu! Like me, you weren’t there when that incident happened. But that the fact that you won’t give Tanaka-san the benefit of the doubt and you’re going along with most of the people here, just makes you worse than the killer we’re after!” Kame shouts and decks the guy.

“ Kamenashi-san, I was there. I know what happened and what most of the people around say is true. If you were smart then you would get another partner and leave him to his demons and ghosts.” Akira tries to reason.

“ Look, I only know what the general whispers speak of but I do know there’s more to it than that. You assholes may not trust him, but I do! I don’t care if he ever tells me anything or if he even never wants to become my friend, that doesn’t matter. What matters is how those who know Tanaka-san the best treat him.” Kame retorts, not realizing that Koki and the chief had come out to see what all the yelling was about.

“ Its your life but if something major happens and you’re trusting him to come and help you then you’re a bigger fool than I thought you were.”  The guy next to Akira says.

“ Maybe I am a fool, but I just know there’s more to the story than what you know. But I’m not going to force him to talk about something so sensitive. The only ones that know for sure about what happened can give you the answers you want, while one is regrettably no longer with us..a shame too as I would have loved to got know him..doesn’t mean that you have to treat Tanaka-san the way you do.” Kame finishes.

“ He’s one helluva fire cracker, aint he Tanaka-san?”  the chief remarks.

Koki just remains silent, unable to find his voice..which he’s pretty sure is located somewhere near his kidneys. He’s really confused, he doesn’t understand how someone who knows so little about what happened and is curious to know, but won’t ask about it, is so willing to put his life in Koki’s hands...to trust him.

Kame turns around to see why the chief called them back only to find that Koki and the chief standing there listening to the whole thing, he’s also pretty sure that they saw him punch Massu’s lights out as well.

“ Oh...Tanaka-san..Chief...I guess you heard.” he says, stuffing his right hand in his pocket to hide his bruised knuckles.

Again Koki says nothing as he seems to ignore Kame and heads for his car. Kame then turns his attention to their boss.

“ So, what was the big emergency? I’d ask him but he doesn’t want to talk to me right now it seems.” Kame says.

“ We got another letter from the killer but it didn’t read the same as the first one did, so I gave to Tanaka-san to look over. He seems more confused than angry about what you said to Akira-san and the others. He blames himself for what happened a year ago, while he’s a good agent..alot of people here never trusted him and thought me and his ex-partner were stupid to trust an ex-yakuza leader. But over time they got past that and learned that he wasn’t what he used to be and his instincts with people and his ability to figure out someone’s next move makes him a valuable part of my Task Force. But you better go now, Tanaka-san should be waiting.”

Kame nods and heads out to where Koki was waiting in his car. He was relieved that Koki didn’t leave without him since he was Kame’s only way home tonight. He hurries over and climbs in the passenger side. After telling Koki that he can just drop him off at his apartment he stays quiet the whole back, leaving Koki to his own thoughts.

“ Well...I’ll see you tomorrow.” Kame says getting out once the car comes to a stop in front of his building. Koki just nods and pulls away.

No sooner does Kame get inside and change into something far more comfier than he hears a knock on his door, wondering who it could be at such a late hour, he opens it and is surprised to see Koki standing there...

“ Koki? I thought you went home?” Kame asks clearly confused as he moves so the guy’s not standing in the hallway.

“ Why?” Was all he asks.

“ Why...what?” He still doesn’t understand.

“ Why would do you trust me so much? Moreover why would you stick up for someone who..” Kame cuts him off.

“Oh that. Why wouldn’t I? Like I told the others..I don’t know what happened. Yes, it does suck that you guys lost someone so close...especially you. Before you get railed up..I noticed the picture of you and your ex-partner on your dresser, you know the cute one with the heart sticker on the frame. I didn’t touch it nor did I bother to ask you about it. I wish he was the guy was still here, I would’ve liked to meet him. I have a feeling I could’ve learned alot from him, but I’m not going to ask you to talk about it. Besides, the only two people that know what really went down that day are you two. Just because you couldn’t stop the wheels of fate from turning doesn’t make me feel like I can't trust you, Koki.” he states while handing Koki a beer.

“ When did you...?” Koki asks, again he sees the strange light in Kame’s eyes that caused him to stare at the guy from the beginning. The same look he always saw in Maru’s eyes when he understood Koki even though Koki didn’t tell him what was wrong.

“ When I stayed the night at your place remember and I saw the picture both nights I was there. Everyone has personal demons Koki, even me, but it just depends on how you deal with them. Everyone in their own way walks down the road to redemption seeking for something that they can’t find because the road is dark and they’re frightened...not realizing that sometimes it takes the help of another person to help them forgive themselves and to move on. Can I tell you about the dream I had the night before I was transferred here?” Kame asks they start on their third beer.

“ Yeah sure.” Koki says.

“ Well, I wasn’t sure at the time but I am now. I had dream about your ex-partner, I didn’t know at the time who he was nor did I know his name. I still don’t know his name, but what he told me that night confused me. He told me I was going to meet someone that needs my help and that this person hasn’t kept his promise. Then I woke up and got a call stating that I was being transferred here. At first I thought it was just because I was drunk but then the same dream occurred after we slept together that first night. I don’t know what it means nor was he clear about what promise he was talking about. After I heard the rumors and stopped you from punching that jerk Akira I decided then to never ask you about it. I stand by what I told them and you, its only my business if you wish it to be. I don’t ask you to be friends with me or anything else as long as we can work on this case in a peaceful manner then its fine by me.” Kame says with a slight shrug.

“ Why would he come to you and not me?” Koki asked finally.

“ I don’t know, Koki. The minds of our departed loved ones work in mysterious ways.” Kame says finishing his beer. “ Now do you want to continue to get drunk or do you want help with the letter the chief gave you? Bare in mind that we both start looking for a distraction when we’ve had too much to drink.” Kame advises.

“ Let’s work on the letter.” Koki says with a small smile.

“ Okay.”

They spend the next hour pouring over the letter and but they couldn’t find any discrepancies, or Kame couldn’t anyway. It was a quarter to one in the morning when Koki noticed what was so odd about the two letters.

“ Hey look at this...” Koki says.

“ What is it?”

“ In the letter that was sent a few days ago, the killer made sure to put his calling card symbol on the top of the letter. While on the new one, its at the bottom of the letter. See this, the killer said that he expected more from the TPD and that he wasn’t hiding. But in the first one he says that he is in hiding.” Koki finishes.

“ Hey you’re right. But if he’s hiding but not hiding then...wait a minute...I know where he is hiding out at Koki.”

“ Huh? How do you work that out?”

“Its like the killer said in his first letter, “I’m hiding where you can’t find me.” But in his second letter he states that he isn’t in hiding..think about it Koki..if you don’t want to be found but can be seen by everyone around you where then is the best place to hide?” Kame answers.

A light bulb goes off in Koki’s head as he says “ Right out in the open. In public places! You’re right Kame! Nice work. But unfortunately that doesn’t get us any closer to figuring who the killer is and how to catch him.” Koki says stifling a yawn.

He stands up and after thanking Kame for the beers he heads home. After walking through his front door he changes his clothes and climbs into bed and falls asleep almost immediately. Kame, meanwhile stays awake a little while longer trying to figure out what it is that Koki’s ex-partner wants from him, without meaning to he falls asleep on his couch musing over the dreams he keeps having.

A month goes by and for whatever reason no new victims pop up. It seems that whoever is behind these deaths is either taking a break or just toying with the authorities, leaving Koki and Kame time to figure things out, not just with this case...but with each other as well. Especially since Koki called him out to go drinking with him and without meaning to they both wound up drunker than they both knew they should’ve been and with Koki waking up in Kame’s bed for a change...seeing as the bar was closer to Kame’s place than Koki’s. They both know that they should really just stop doing that but for one reason or another they just can’t.

“ Did anyone ever tell you how good of a distraction you are, Koki? Besides you know who.” Kame asks smiling.

“ Hmm....other than him, you’re the first. Everyone else just kept it to themselves I guess.” Koki says as they drive over to Mr. Kawamura’s place to see if he knows anything else about the soul binding symbol that was found either on the victim’s body or next to it.

They pull up and knock on his door. No one answers even though his car is in the drive way. Koki tries to knob and finds that the door is unlocked, both him and Kame pull out their guns and walk cautiously into the living room. They search the downstairs but find nothing out of the ordinary. Its only when Kame walks into the bathroom does he see the body of Mr. Kawamura laying naked in the bathtub, blood on the fkoor and in the water and slash marks on both wrists.

“ Koki! Get up here!” Kame calls.

“ Yeah what is it?” Koki asks as Kame points to the body.

“ Why would he kill himself?” Kame asks as he calls for an ambulance and the coroner.

“ I don’t know.” Koki says as he searches for any sign of a suicide note, luckily he finds one, “ I found a note saying that if he couldn’t live in this world without Saiyru then he wanted to go where she went.” he hands Kame the note so he can put in an evidence bag.

“ Well Koki, whatever he may have known about that symbol he made sure to take with him to his grave. Its a shame since he probably could’ve helped up us with this case.” Kame says as they head back to tell the chief that Mr. Kawamura committed suicide.
