Summary: Is there a way for one broken and defeated detective to navigate the road to redemption alone...or does he need help?
They say the shortest road to hell is one that is paved with good intentions, but the road to redemption is, not only the longest journey one could take, but that its surrounded with the very demons that you’re trying to escape from. Demons that you have come to know so well that its like they’re a part of your very soul, that you know if by letting them go then you’ll cease to exist. Even though you long for a way to move on, to find a new life again you realize that its not within your power to force that which you aren’t destined to have. Or so one would think, right? How does one obtain that which is only beyond one’s reach if you refuse, through fear, to grab it? Hmm, instead of answering this question outright, how about I tell you a tale of a guy who seeks this very answer and the outcome is not what he ever expected to happen...not to him anyway.
It was six in the morning when the alarm goes off. Koki shuts it off and turns to gently prod the guy sleeping next to him, “ I should really stop these one night stands, but how can anyone love someone as weak as me anyway,” he thinks as the guy opens his eyes.
“Are you always this gentle with the guys you bring home?” the young man says sleepily. He just smiles while Koki just gives him a dead look in return. “ What time is it?” he asks finally.
Koki says nothing and heads to the shower to get ready for work. The young guy he brought home just watches as he shuts the bathroom door. Kame grabs his clothes and leaves, he gets home to shower and change for work, still musing over the guy he slept with and the dead look he gave him. It was the same dead and defeated look the older man carried the night before, Kame didn’t know the man’s name or he was pretty sure he didn’t remember it. Just like Kame was dead sure that the other guy was too drunk to remember the conversation they had before they wound up in bed together. He won’t deny that the sex wasn’t good, it was..great even but he doesn’t know why he agreed to leave with the other last night since Kame doesn’t do one night stands like that, there was just something about how broken the man was that he just couldn’t bring himself to decline the offer. After his shower he changes and heads to the station for his meeting with the chief.
Koki Tanaka comes out from the bathroom and sees that the other has left already. Its good he thinks since he wasn’t looking for anything new anyway and after the death of his last partner, who not only was his partner on the Special Task force for the TPD, but they were life partners as well. Or would be if said man was still alive. Koki was supposed to be on an indefinite leave since that incident happened but he got a call from his boss right before he left for the bar last night, saying the he has to come in for a meeting. He hoped that they weren’t trying to pair him up with someone, since he has so much doubt in his own skills and he doesn’t want to be responsible for another human life should he fail like he did last time. He goes to leave and on the way out he passes his dresser, he pauses and picks up the picture and picking it up he says...
“ I wish you were still here, Yuichi. Then things can go back to how they used to be before...” saying no more he puts it back and heads off to the station. Koki knows that his ex-partner can’t come back, he’s known it for a year now but that still doesn’t keep him from wishing that he could turn back the cold hands of time to change the events of that fateful day. He knows its his fault that Maru is dead and he knows that’s what everyone else thinks too. He knows because he sees the glaring accusations in their gaze every time he sees anyone that knew them.
So when he’s not being a depressed drunk...he’s doing all sorts of volunteer work..gaining all sorts of awards thinking that he’s going to gain some sort of redemption but all he’s doing is the opposite. No sooner does he walk through the doors of the prescient do the whispers start, whispers that he’s become to accustomed to but they still sting all the same.
“ Why is he here?”
“ I thought he was on an extended leave?”
“ He is. I heard he had a meeting with the chief, I hope they don’t give him a new partner.”
“ He used to be the best there was.”
He didn’t recognize Koki at first being to absorbed in the book he was reading, hearing the whispered conversation next to him causes Kame to turn his head.
“ Sorry to eavesdrop but is he really that good?” Kame asks the guy next to him.
“ Yes, he was. I just hope they don’t give him another partner seeing as he couldn’t...” the guy said.
“ KAMENAHI-SAN?!!”
“ Coming! Sorry but the chief is calling me.” Kame says as the chief cuts off the guy’s explanation.
No sooner does he walk through the door that both him and Koki get the shock of their lives.
“ YOU!” They both say at once as the atmosphere around them became very awkward.
“ You two know each other?” Chief Kobiyashi asks.
“ Um...sort of.” Kame says as the events of last night come flooding back to both of them.
“ Good. Anyway, Tanaka-san..Kamenashi-san is going to be your new partner from here on out. I know you’re on extended leave but we need your skills for the current murder case we’re working on.”
“ NO! I already told you that after what happened a year ago that I didn’t want to be responsible for...”
“ If Tanaka-san is against this then I can always be someone else’s partner.” Kame says not wanting to be a bother to Koki.
“ Its okay Kamenashi-san.” the chief turns his attention back to Koki, “ I know what you said and I understand how you feel, Tanaka-san, I was also there day remember. You two were a great team and your instincts are the best around, we all lost a great agent and friend. Now stop being difficult or I just might force you into those meetings you’re dead set against on going to for your drinking. I’m not asking you to babysit the guy, he’s new and only a year younger than you. He’s more than capable of taking care of himself but he’s being transferred here from the Osaka district and he’s used to working with the best. Listen, not everyone blames you for what happened and those that do....well just tell’em to fuck off.”
Realizing that there was no point in arguing anymore Koki just nods as he’s given the case file to go over, while the Chief brings them up to speed on the specifics. An hour later Koki and Kame are walking out of their boss’s office to get started on their investigation when their path is blocked by the guy that Kame was talking to earlier.
“ Hmmph...I don’t see why you’re even on such a high profile case. You drink to excess, your skills have deteriorated and...”
“ Shut up, Akira!” Koki says.
“ He got the case because the Chief needs him and the fact that you don’t have it clearly says whose the better agent.” Kame says in Koki’s defense.
“ I see you got stuck with Tanaka-san..I’d watch your own back if I were you.” another guy says.
“ Why?” Kame asks, confusion written all over his face.
“ So you don’t wind up six feet under like his last one did after he failed to save him.” Akira taunts.
“ Why you...” Koki goes to punch the guy but Kame stops him.
“ Let it go Tanaka-san. He’s not worth it.” Kame drags Koki away as Akira shouts that Kame’s a fool for trusting him.
Once they’re outside Koki shakes himself free from his new partner’s grip.
“ Why did you stop me?” Koki asks clearly agitated.
“ Because..” Kame reasons, “ he’s not worth it. Its like the Chief said just let what guys like him say roll off your back.”
“ Don’t you start with that shit as well, you weren’t there..you don’t know what..” Koki starts but Kame stops him.
“ You’re right I wasn’t there, I don’t know what happened. I just figured there was more to it than what the few rumors I have already heard tell of, its clearly a sensitive issue and its only my business if you want it to be. If not then I won’t ask you about it..I’m curious not nosey. I won’t lie and say that the rumors didn’t peak my curiosity, Tanaka-san, but I won’t go around nosing into your business behind your back.” Kame says trying to calm Koki down as they get in car and head off to take a closer look at the lastest crime scene.
“ Thank you.” was all Koki said as he look at Kame. That’s when he noticed something that confuses him. He keeps staring until Kame fidgets uncomfortably under the look Koki’s now giving him.
“ W-what?”
“ Its just...nothing. I’m sorry for staring. Shall we go now?”
Kame nods as Koki starts driving.
A half an hour later they pull up to the Wretches&Kings night club where the strange crime took place. While Koki questions the owner, Kame goes inside to see what he can dig up. There was blood on the walls and nearby tables and a strange symbol was painted on the floor where the body was laying. Being careful not to contaminate the crime scene Kame gets down inspect the body, on his first inspection he doesn’t notice anything out of the ordinary.
“ Well Kamenashi-san?”
“ Its not much but..there’s this...” he points to the symbol on the ground.
“ Hmm...” was Koki said as made a rough copy in his notes.
“ Robbery wasn’t the motive as the victim still has his wallet and the 4000 yen that’s inside.”
Turning to the owner Koki asks for the guest list from last night. After letting the coroner take the body away, Kame sees an envelope fall from the guy’s pocket. Realizing it was evidence he grabs a set of gloves, and after putting them on, he picks up and reads it.
“ Tanaka-san, Come and look at this. It fell from the victim has the coroner was putting him on the stretcher. It appears to be some sort of note.” Kame says and hands the note to his partner.
“ He who denies his sins is the worst sinner there is.” Koki mumbles reading the note Kame gave him. After making a copy he puts the original in an evidence bag as the owner comes over with the guest list that Koki requested, it was kinda lengthy, and hands it to Kame. He thanks the owner and tries to get his partner’s attention.
“This makes no sense. But it fits with the other notes that were found with previous attacks.” Koki says remembering the contents of their case file.
“ I wonder who would leave such a strange calling card.” Kame says out loud but more to himself than Koki.
“ That’s a good question Kamenashi-san...a really good question. But lets concentrate on the possible witnesses that were here last night.”
After running the names through the data base they head off to question the first person their list. After a few hours of questions...Koki was growing frustrated that they can’t pick up a single lead other than what was found with the body. Annoyed he drops his partner off at the station so he can pick up his car.
“ I’ll see you tomorrow, Kamenashi-san.” Koki says as Kame goes to get out of the car.
“ Okay and please drop the honorifics. Just Kazuya or Kame is fine and here’s my cell in case you need to get a hold of me.” He says and hands Koki a slip of paper with his number on it and then leaves.
Koki just watches as the guy walks away, after putting the number in his glove box he heads back to his one bed room apartment and instead of working on his case he drinks until he passes out, where he has the strangest dream..
The next day Koki wakes up to his phone going off, looking at the id display he flips it open..
“ Yes, Chief?”
“ There’s going to be another murder. This time the perp sent us a letter stating who he was going to kill next. Get over there immediately.” His boss gives him the address.
He pulls some clothes on and calls Kame’s phone, who tells him his address so Koki can pick him up on the way.
“ Let’s hope we’re in time.” Kame says as soon as he shuts the car door.
Koki just nods and speeds towards their destination hoping Kame’s right and they can prevent another murder. Its only after they are shown into the bedroom that both men feel their stomaches churn..by the time the police got the killer’s note last night and when Koki got the phone call the killer already struck. Only this scene was worst than the last one and again they found very little to go on.
“ Damn...instead of the symbol being next to the body, the killer carved into her chest and inner thigh.” Kame said as they found the same note from the previous cases.
“ Yeah this guy’s not someone to take lightly...hey look at this I think our killer is getting careless.” Koki said and points to some fabric that was stuck to the broken glass from the window that the killer used to access the the victim’s house.
After sending it off to the lab Kame turns to Koki...
“ Either that or he’s just toying with us, Tanaka-san.”
“ Hmm...come by my place tonight and we’ll go over what we have so far.” Koki said, even though he didn’t want a partner he knows that he’s going to need help if he plans on solving this case.
A few hours later Kame knocks on Koki’s door and what he sees when the door opens causes his mid section to tighten.
“ Oh hey..sorry about this. I just got out of the shower..just let me change and we can get to work.” Koki says as he heads off to change.
“ Have you eaten yet?” Kame asks when Koki comes back.
“ No, I was just about to order a pizza.”
“ Sounds good. Oh and I looked up that strange symbol we found on the internet and from what I could find its used some sort of ancient ritual that binds the soul to the earth, so the binder can achieve immortality or some such crap like that.” Kame says as the their food shows up.
“ Nice work Kamenashi-san. But look at this here, each symbol that was found by the bodies or on them is slightly different than the one before it.” Koki says as he lays out the pictures on the table.
“ Hey...you’re ~cough~ right..” Kame tries to say but winds up by choking on his food.
“ Drink this.” Koki hands Kame a beer to wash his food down with.
“ ~cough~ Thanks.” He smiles gratefully.
Its only after Koki’s had a few beers in him does he bring up what happened between them the night before..only its kinda hard with the way Kame keeps rolling his sucker around in his mouth.
“ Um..about the other night...what happened between us..” Kame cuts him off.
“ There’s nothing to talk about. What happened, happened. Besides, its not like it can be called a one night stand anymore right? We work together and you even have my number, grant you its for work but still.” Kame says as he climbs into Koki’s lap, seeing as he’s had more to drink than Koki.
“ I really don’t think we should...” he’s cut off again by a finger on his lips.
“ We’re both drunk and horny, I don’t ask you to love me all I’m asking for is a release...but if you don’t want to then...” Kame just shrugs and climbs off, “ Well I’ll go home now..see you tomorrow.” his hand just touches the door knob when he hears Koki call out.
“ Wait..”
“ Yeah wha...” Kame’s cut off by Koki’s lips on his.
Neither one understands why they are doing this, maybe its the alcohol talking maybe its not. Right now the only thing either one of them gives a damn about is what’s happen at this very moment. Koki picks Kame up and feels Kame’s legs lock behind his back as he kisses down Kame’s neck..
“ Oh Tanaka-san..” Kame moans as his growing erection presses against Koki’s abdomen, while he’s being carried towards Koki’s bedroom.
“ Just call me koki...” he says as dropping Kame on his bed. Kame just watches with cloudy, lust filled eyes as Koki removes his shirt.
Lounging on Kame, Koki shoves his tongue past Kame’s lips while rubbing himself against the younger guy beneath him. He removes Kame’s shirt with surprising quickness and continues down his neck and chest while they both work on each other’s belts. Once they get rid of the rest of their clothes, Koki prepares Kame and pushes in swiftly.
“ Oh...Koki...harder..I’m..going..to...” Kame warns.
“ Oh Kazuya...” Koki pants against Kame’s neck as he does as he’s told.
Koki wraps his fingers around Kame’s aching hard on and starts pumping in time with his movements, a minute later Kame’s spilling between them..his seed gluing their stomaches together. Koki only lasts a minute longer when he feels Kame tighten around his member, squeezing out every last drop. Koki uses what energy he has to pull out as Kame grabs the nearest piece of clothing and cleans them up. When he’s done he turns to Koki and says...
“ In regards to last night, I think we were both searching for a distraction and that’s why we ended up here in the first place. Just like now..this is just a distraction nothing more.” He finishes as he stifles a huge yawn noticing the dead gaze never leaves Koki’s eyes.
The next morning as Koki and Kame are heading out to continue their investigation as Koki says..
“ Look just because we’ve slept together twice doesn’t mean we’re together or anything. We just work together and I still don’t want a new partner, but as it is I have been out of the game for so long that I do need help on this one.” he finishes remembering the promise he made to Maru right before he died.
“ We are whatever you want us to be Koki.” Kame says thinking back to the strange dream he had and then his not so coincidental transfer from Osaka, as they pull up to their latest victim’s lover’s house.
“ Do you think this guy knows anything, Koki?” Kame asks eventually as they knock on the door.
“ I don’t know..yet. But he was the last person to see the woman alive.” He says just the door opens.
“ Hello. Can I help you.” the man asks politely.
“ I’m detective Tanaka and this detective Kamenashi. We’re investigating a string of very strange murder cases. “
“ Do you know a “Mrs. Hakkita Saiyru?” Kame asks.
“ Um..please come in.”
Koki and Kame follow the man into his living room where they learn that not only did he know the victim, but that she was having an affair and was cheating on her husband with him.
“ Mr. Kawamura, did her husband know about you two?”
“ Not that I know of. But he’s been out of the country for the past eight months and we just started seeing each other three months ago.” Mr. Kawamura says sadly. “ Saiyru didn’t suffer did she?”
“ No. It was a quick death. Does this mean anything to you?” Koki asks and shows him a picture of the symbol that was carved into the female victim’s chest and thigh.
“I’m sorry but No, I have never seen this before. I wish I could be of more help.” he says.
“ Well, we’ll be in touch if we have anymore questions.” Kame said as him and Koki walk out the door. “ I’m sorry for your loss, no one deserves to die that way.” he adds.
Mr. Kawamura just nods as they get leave him to mourn his loss in peace. Koki and Kame drive off to question the victim’s boss and co-workers.
“ Well Koki..what’d you think?”
“ I think he’s distraught and I think he knows more about that symbol than he wants us to believe.” he answers.
“ Not to question your abilities but how do you work that one out?”
“ Well, when I showed him the picture of the mark carved on his girlfriend’s body...he looked like he just saw a ghost. But do I think he had anything to do with her death...no I don’t.” Koki explains as they pull into the parking lot of the insurance company the victim was employed at when she was murdered. They head up to talk to her boss unaware that he hates cops and most of all detectives of any kind.
